Home Of The 2007 PIAA State Champions

WPIAL Champs!

Congratulations to all the WPIAL Champions:

Single A - Clairton Bears
Clairton defeated Rochester in a thriller by a final of 14-13 and will advance to the state playoffs to face District 5 champion Conemaugh Township next Friday, December 4th, 7:00pm at Yough High School.

Double A - GCC
Is David Miller unstoppable?, Miller rushed 34 times for 203 yards in a 33-7 romp of a young Aliquippa team to help GCC secure their first WPIAL title. Miller will carry his team into the schools first ever playoff appearance also, this Friday against Bedford. Place and time TBD.

Triple A - West Allegheny
In one of the more exciting games yesterday, Caputo and Shell were exactly as advertised. West Allegheny’s Caputo ran the ball 25 times for 178 yards and four touchdowns while Hopewell’s Shell carried the ball 44 times for 274 yards and four touchdowns. West Allegheny held off a late fourth quarter drive from Hopewell with a final of 36-28 to advance into the state quarterfinals where they'll meet Erie Cathedrial Prep this Friday at North Allegheny High school.

Quad A - Woodland Hills
For a third straight year and for the second time as the number one seed, Gateway was denied the WPIAL gold again. This time in a 10-0 shut out by Woodland Hills. The Wolverines will meet State College in the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs this Friday at Mansion Park in Altoona.

Basketball Switch Over

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Mine was wonderful, except for hearing GCC won the AA WPIAL Championship today. But I guess they deserve it in a way. If Muzzy wouldn't have got it this year with a running back like Miller, I don't think he ever would have got it.

Anyway, I've made the switch over to the Basketball mode here on the site. Over on the right you'll find all the info, schedules, rosters, etc. on the boys and the girls teams and above you'll be able to click on the image to check your numbers for your bingo cards. That will remain there until the end of the season, so you can check it at your own leisure.

If you haven't gotten your bingo cards yet please scroll down a little bit to find out how to get them.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I got some leftovers to take care of!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Weightroom Update 11/18/09

IMG_0001

It's time for another update on the weight room's progress. It's been awhile so here we go.

In the photo above the gentlemen standing on the right is actually standing where the boy's room will be and the gentlemen on the left is about where the girl's room will be.

Photos of the progress from 11/13/09 can be seen here, and then some more photos taken just today, about an hour ago to be precise, can be seen right here.

I will also be doing a front page article for the Jeannette Spirit for next week's edition, with more detail on the buildings specs and such, so be sure to pick that copy up at your favorite store. If you'd like to have the Spirit delivered to your house click here to subscribe.

On the tube tonight...

Buffalo Bulls (Davonte) face Miami (OH) tonight on ESPN-U (digital channel 266 here in Jeannette). Kick off set for 6:00.

Semifinal Picks

I gotta be downright honest with you. The game I am anticipating the most is the Thomas Jefferson - Hopewell AAA match up destined to be at Heinz Field.

Can sophomore sensation Rushel Shell and the Vikings knock three time consecutive defending AAA WPIAL champs Thomas Jefferson from the top of the mountain? We'll see, but they'll both have to get past this weeks opponents first.

In AA, I don't know what to think. Last week resulted in a few surprises, one in particular, the exploding offense of Keystone Oaks and another being the crumble of Center's defense.

With that being said, I gotta go with Beaver Falls over Aliquippa. Simply because I think the Tigers will be out for revenge from last years 8-6 WPIAL title loss to the Quips.

And on our side of the bracket, since Mt. Pleasant all of a sudden deflated, I'd like to see the Interstate Conference represented at Heinz Field, I really would! Let's face it, the "David Miller-Cody Cook Show" would be a good one no doubt.

But since I'm a Jayhawk until death decides otherwise, I'm going with Keystone Oaks!

Results from your picks!

Here's how you guys see it playing out! Let's see how we do tonight!

Drill 4 Skill Girl's Tune-Up

The Lady Jays basketball team continues to take advantage of any opportunity to sharpen their skills before the regular season starts.

This Saturday November 14 the girls will play in the Drill 4 Skill Girl's Tune-Up tournament set to be played at South Fayette High School.

Here's the necessary info if you plan to attend (which you should!)

Courts 1, 2, and 3 are located in the High School Gym.
3640 Old Oakdale Road
McDonald, PA 15057

Court 4 is located in the middle school.
3700 Old Oakdale Road
McDonald, PA 15057

Jeannette plays Beaver at 3:20 PM on Court 3
Jeannette plays South Park at 5 PM on Court 4
Jeannette plays Baldwin at 6:40 PM on Court 3

Here is the scoop on the three teams we play.

Beaver is a AA team.
Finished last season 23-3 overall and 11-1 in their conference
Lost to South Fayette in the WPIAL AA Quarterfinals last year
Lost 3 seniors to graduation last year.

South Park is AAA team.
Finished last season 18-8 overall and 8-4 in their conference
Lost to New Castle in the WPIAL AAA Semifinals last year
Lost 7 seniors to graduation last year.

Balwin is AAAA team.
Finished last season 17-8 overall and 8-6 in their conference
Lost to Mt. Lebanon in WPIAL AAAA Quarterfinals last year
Lost 4 seniors to graduation last year.

This tournament should be a very good test for the team.

Another Tuesday game for Davonte

Davonte and the Buffalo Bulls (3-6) vs Ohio Bobcats (6-3) tonight on ESPN 2, channel 28 here in J-Town. Game starts at 7:00

Submit your quarterfinal picks!

Only eight teams remain in each classification which means only one thing, quarterfinals this upcoming Friday.

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I picked all of the correct teams to advance, as did many of you. There was a little uncertainty however with a couple of the teams.

With 35 total submissions, some of you didn't expect South Fayette to advance. 24 votes for and 11 against for them. There was also some uncertainty with Sto-Rox, 21 for and 14 against, and Keystone Oaks was questionable at 25 votes for and 10 against. The others were basically no-brainers, 29-6 for Aliquippa to advance, 32-3 for Mt. Pleasant to continue their undefeated season, 31-4 for GCC and Miller to pursue the championship yet again, and an overwhelming 34-1 for Beaver Falls to keep trucking along.

But now you'll have to do some serious homework, with quarterfinals upon us.

Below are my picks for the quarterfinal games, the flashing ones will be the teams that I feel will advance to the semifinals, and here is why:

Lets start with:
Game 1
South Fayette? Well all I can say is it was a nice, fun ride while it lasted. Undefeated or not, I'm going with the experienced veteran post season team of Aliquippa with the win. If you can pull off the upset, then I'll become a believer, but everyone knows Aliquippa plays some of their best ball, in the post season. Am I right, Muzzy?

Game 2
Paul Jones has been stumbling all season, hell he even stumbled against Shady Side Academy just last night! For Jones to advance his Vikings to the semifinals he'll have to watch his steps, but even if he does Beaver Falls will be too much. Cody Cook ran for 252 yards last night while his teammate Admire Carter rushed for 153...This Duo actually is Dynamite, and will blow Sto-Rox out of the hunt!

Game 3
Out of the four AA games, this one matches up the best. Mt Pleasant (PF-330/PA-102, Average PF-33.0/Average PA-10.2) and Keystone Oaks (PF-326/PA-106, Average PF-32.6/Average PA-10.6). If your gonna go to any games, I would pick this one! Bryce Ansell, Mt. Pleasant's leading rusher, sustained a serious knee injury last night and awaits MRI results. Hope your ok young man, but with or without him, and still flying pretty high, Mt. Pleasant will advance to the semifinals!

Game 4
We have approached that time in the season where GCC normally stumbles and is forced to watch relentless recruiting efforts, go down the drain. Center's defense allows on average only 6.9 points a game. They've been stuffing running backs all season long, why stop now? Senior Luka Campos of Center, kicked a 24yd and a 29yd field goal last night in a 27-0 shutout of Washington. GCC's two close losses this season (6-0 to McGuffey and 36-35 to Mt. Pleasant) will literally come back to haunt them.

That's what I think! Click on the image below to pick your choices for the quarterfinals.

Sign here, here, here and here!

Wednesday November 11 will be the first day of the early signing period for seniors to sign letters of intent for colleges.

Jeannette currently has four outstanding athletes who are ready to sign on this day.

Lady Jays all time leading scorer, Kayla Cook who finished last season with 264 total points while achieving the 1,000 career points plateau, will sign her letter of intent to play basketball for Coastal Carolina.

Brian Weightman talk is quickly replacing the Terrelle Pryor talk around the water cooler these days. After a disappointing and frustrating football season, Brian received an offer to play baseball at Duquesne University and will sign his letter on the 11th also. Perhaps missing football was a sign from above Brian?

Now these next two young ladies have absolutely impressed me since day one of attending their games, so for them both being the first ever recipients of softball scholarships in Jeannette history doesn't surprise me at all.

Kirstie Cortazzo will sign with Gannon University while her Lady Jay teammate Katherine Fey, will sign with Wheeling-Jesuit University.

Congratulations to each one of you, and the best of luck!
