Home Of The 2007 PIAA State Champions

It's been a long time coming!

It was the same exact score from Saturday's match up 6-5, except the Hawks were on top and didn't require extra innings to shut down a Dynamo rally, they ended it in the 7th with great pitching, outstanding defensive plays, smart coaching decisions, and the pure desire to clinch a playoff spot.

For the first time in 30 years, the Hawks have clinched a playoff spot in WPIAL Baseball!! And a section title isn't out of the picture.

Mike Mash recorded 8 strike outs and the win today, while Chris Smith recorded the save in the seventh. Brett Elliot was 3 for 3 (single and 2 doubles), Tom Paulone was 2 for 3 (2 doubles), Jordan doubled, Brandon doubled, Brian doubled and singled. Other big hits came from Mike, Ryan and Nick.

Photos from this historic game (oh yeah, this is one for the history books), can be seen right here.

Congratulations Hawks and to the coaches, on the play off berth!!, If there was ever a team that deserves a playoff spot, it is the 2009 Jayhawks! Way to go!!

Hawks record another mercy

The Hawks record yet another mercy game,(6th of the season if I'm not mistaken) handing non section Vincentian, an 11-1 loss today at home.

Chris Smith drove in the first run of the game and finished off at 3 for 3 today, (double and 2 singles), and Micheal Mash drove home the last 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th, to give the Hawks 11 and the mercy of Vincentian. Brett Elliott picks up the win on the mound for the Hawks.

Tomorrow, weather providing, the Hawks will rematch Springdale and try to redeem themselves from the 6-5 loss on Saturday. First pitch set for 4:15

Photos from today's match up can be seen right here.

SA rallies bottom 7, to maintain control of Section 4

South Allegheny beats the Lady Jays, but they had to work very hard for it. Final out of SA, 6-5. Lady Jays were leading going into the bottom of the seventh 5-4, but wasn't able to seal the deal.

SA moves to 9-1 in conference and will replay the Lady Jays, who are now at 7-3 in the conference, on Friday the 1st.

Shake it off girls, a lot of softball left!!

Back in the Saddle

The Hawks wasted no time getting back in the saddle after the 6-5 loss to Springdale on Saturday. Nick Campbell cracked a 2 run homer today as the Hawks mercy St. Joes by a final of 14-1.

Welcome back Hawks!! Not to worry, you'll get another crack at Springdale this Wednesday.

Vincentian travels to town tomorrow for a non section match up, first pitch set for 3:00.

Hawks rally falls short

It was bigger than life itself! And to keep it simple, the word "quit", isn't in the Jayhawk vocabulary. Never was, never will be. Hawks rallied back after being down 5-1 to find themselves in the top of the seventh inning, down 5-4, with hopes diminishing with 2 outs, and Chris Smith jacks one over the center field fence to tie it up at 5 a piece. The Hawks defense stood tall in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Bottom of the 8th, bases loaded for Springdale, still tied at 5 a piece, with 2 outs and a force out at any bag for the Hawks. Brett Elliott makes an incredible stop on a solid shot, and just missed the force out at second base by a second. Hawks drop one at Springdale, final 6-5.

It was that close folks!!

The Hawks will have to shake this one off and get ready for a busy schedule next week, and one of the games will be the rematch on Wednesday with this same Springdale team.

Photos from todays game can be seen right here.

OSU Spring Game

Here's your first chance to see Terrelle and OSU in action for the 2009 season. The BIG TEN Network will be airing the Ohio State Spring Game live over the internet, and you can check it out from the comfort of your computer! (Unless of course if your going to the shoe!)

Game starts at 1:35 on Saturday!

Paulone powers the Hawks

It's getting pretty hot out there. And I'm not talking about the weather. I'm referring to the way the Hawks are playing this season, and the damage they're inflicting on their opponents.

Tom Paulone was 3 of 4 today with a double and 2 solo shots, 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored, as the Hawks crushed Leechburg by a final of 11-1. His wasn't the only hot bat today. Brian tripled and doubled, solo shots came from Ryan (1 RBI), Chris (2 RBI's), and Mike who got the game ending RBI.

The Hawks have one goal in mind, and have let nothing get in their way of achieving it, including powerhouse Serra Catholic. This match up however, we'll have to wait until May 4th, to see the outcome of.

For now though, the Hawks will take care of the matter at hand, that being the game at Springdale tomorrow at 1:30. Serra crushed Springdale today by a final of 19-7.

Photos from today's game can be seen right here.

Lady Jays continue impressive season

The defense turned two double plays, Kirstie hit a homerun and K-fey fired 8 strikeouts as the Lady Jays made easy work of the Lady Wildcats by a final of 11-1.

Today's win put the Lady Jays at 7-1 in section play and closed the gap on South Allegheny who sit at 8-1 on top of the conference. On Monday the 27th, these two teams will meet for the first of two meetings this season, for a 3:30 start at SA.

You've already climbed the mountain girls, now you got to fight to secure your spot up there!

Photo's from today's game can be seen right here!

It's twice as nice, to be a Lady Jay

It was twice as nice for the Lady Jays today, as they handed Charleroi two straight losses, to increase their record to 6-1 in the conference and move into 2nd place only 2 games behind South Allegheny.

Game 1 of the double header brought a final score of 16-0 after just 3 innings of play. Kirstie and Chelsea each had home runs. Kirstie also doubled along with Lauren Bosley and Katherine Fey. Katherine also threw for 8 strikeouts in game one.

Game 2 resulted in a final score of 6-0. Chelsea was able to find the other side of the fence in this game also, while Kirstie had to settle for a triple and a double in this one. Lauren Maline also doubled for the Lady Jays. In this game, K-Fey threw an amazing 14 strike outs. (Save some of that for Monday, kid!)

Way to go girls! The Lady Jays will return to action tomorrow when they host East Allegheny for a 4:15 start, and then on Monday when they travel to South Allegheny for a 4:15 start as they try to decrease that 2 game lead.

Springdale game moved to Saturday

The boys Springdale game was PPD until Saturday at 1:30 at Springdale

Game canceled tomorrow

The boys baseball game against Clairton, scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled, the next game will be at Springdale on Thursday, and then home on Friday against Leechburg.

License to Lead

Nice article on Terrelle leading the Buckeyes this season, over at ESPN.

Has Serra met their match?, Stay tuned...

If your waiting for the final score of the Serra Catholic game, you'll have to wait until May 4th, when Serra travels to Jeannette.

Today's game was called midway through, due to bad field conditions and the rain. The score was 3-3 after a completion of 5 full innings.

Brian Weightman cracked a double to clear the loaded bases, and give the Hawks an early 3-0 lead. Serra battled back to tie it, but fell short for the win with a magnificent performance on defense from the Hawks, tagging out the winning run at the plate. I told you this one came loaded with drama!

Stay tuned for the final of this one, and the rematch right after on May 4th!!

The stage is set

If there was ever a baseball game to go see folks, the one tomorrow, pairing up the Jayhawks and Serra Catholic, would be that one.

I don't need to add drama to this match up, it comes fully loaded. Both teams set on top Section 5 with respectable 3-0 records. Serra rest at 9-1 overall with their only loss coming at the hands of Seton LaSalle. Seton shut them out 10-0 back on Mar 23. Jeannette maintains a 6-1 overall record losing their only game thus far to Geibel by a mere run, 6-5. The Trib has the Hawks ranked at 5th and Serra ranked at 2nd.

First pitch is set for 4:00 at Serra Catholic, and I really don't think you'll want to miss this one.

Serra Catholic Roster, right here.
Jayhawk Roster here.

SWG silence the Lions roar

Nicole Hall recorded 12 strikeouts for the Jeannette Lions while playing under the lights this evening. Unfortunately the Lions couldn't hold on as Southwest Greensburg rallied late in the game to win by a final of 9-8, to end the JBA's opening day festivities.

Kirstie snags 3 MVP awards

Action in the 11th Annual Junior Varsity Tournament brought 1 win and unfortunately, 2 losses for the Lady Jays.

In the first game, Jeannette beat Trinity by a final of 8-4. From there on out, it was a downward spiral for the girls, dropping the second game to a very good Punxsutawney team, by a final of 6-3 and the last game to Shaler, 4-3 in what I thought was a rather short game. (Controversial call on the time limit for the game, after the Lady Jays got a late start due to the previous game.) Tournament rules are obviously different than regular game rules.

But the day wasn't a total disappointment for the Lady Jays, Kirstie Cortazzo scooped up all 3 of the MVP trophies presented today, for her outstanding performance on the field. Congrats Kirstie!!

Photos from the Punxy game can be seen here.

Photos from the Shaler game can be seen here.

Opening day for the Jeannette Baseball Association enabled me to catch a little of the action from Buster Clarkson field, I'll be returning later this evening for the night games, but here are some photos from earlier today, of Southwest Greensburg and the Dairy Queen.

Nothing to do?

Nothing to do?...Let me help you with that!!

First off the weather is gonna be nice tomorrow, 75 degrees I think. So why not get outside and head to the 11th Annual Junior Varsity Softball Tournament held at Hempfield High School. The Lady Jays will be there, at the Fort Allen field with games at 9:10, 10:30 and 11:50 am.

Not what you had in mind?

Well you can always attend the Jeannette Baseball Associations opening day festivities at Buster Clarkson Field, set to kick off at 9:00am and run all day into games played under the lights!

Perhaps you prefer some spring football games?

You can listen to Heavy and the Buffalo Bulls live webcast of the Blue and White scrimmage game, live from UB Stadium right here.

That ought to hold you over till Sunday!

Hawks mercy Elderton, to claim a share of top spot

Chris Smith singled to start things off and singled again in the bottom of the 5th to end it. Scoring 2 game finishing RBI's to mercy the Bobcats of Elderton by a final of 12-2.

Chris finished the game with 3 singles and a double. Brian singled and tripled to right center and would score on a wild throw. Jordan and brother Ryan Ault got back to back doubles. Jordans brought 2 runs across the plate while Ryan's brought home his brother. Micheal Mash got on base twice and Brandon singled to reach the bag also. This all happened after the Hawks found themselves down 2-0 early in the game.

With today's win the Hawks have tied with Serra catholic at the top of the conference, both with 3-0 records. This without a doubt sets the stage for Mondays 4:00 match up between these teams. So folks, if you go to only one Jayhawk baseball game a season, this would be that one!

Photos from this victory can be seen right here.

Lady Jays mercy Mt. Pleasant

This is a photo from the JV game today, unfortunately I was at the boys game and had to miss the Lady Jays mercy Mt. Pleasant by a final of 11-1. I just knew the girls were better, than their 7-4 loss to Mt. Pleasant back on the 31st of March!

K-Fey's a little mad at me though, I have no photos of her tossing a near perfect game, allowing only 1 hit today. I'm sorry Katherine, can you find it in your heart to forgive me? :)

Chelsea tripled for the Lady Jays and hits were coming off all the Lady Jays bats, in this win. The girls will host East Allegheny on Tuesday with a 4:15 start.

Have you forgiven me yet, K-Fey? :)

More photos of the JV game can be seen right here.

The Buckeye snags another Jayhawk

Either Ohio is running out of football players or there's something over there that releases a pheromone to attract our Jayhawk players.

Cameron Baraziej will join Terrelle and Jordan in Ohio, but not at OSU. Cameron will be attending Mount Union College to become a Raider, where he'll pull double duty as the QB and punter.

Mt. Union is a Division III school out of Alliance, Ohio with an impressive history, winning 10 of the past 15 NCAA Division III titles. Last season the Raiders went undefeated at 15-0.

For a more complete history on Mount Union, click here. And you can find the schools website right here.

Congratulations Cam and the best of luck to you!!

Davonte listed as probable NFL starter

Let's face it guys, there is never a bad time to talk about football, am I right? (yeah I thought so, too!)

So these little football tidbits, comes amidst the baseball and softball season, but have great interest attached to them.

First up is the "Underdog Award" watch list over at nationalchamps.net for Davonte. An award comprised from that website. And the second little football tidbit, and this comes as no surprise to me, but collegefootballnews.com has Heavy listed as a probable NFL starter in the 2010 draft and a possible 3rd round pick.

For now though Heavy, keep your eye on the current prize, here's to another great season in Buffalo!!

Rosters

Sorry for the delay guys, but here are the 2009 rosters for softball and baseball.

Rain or Shine, the Hawks mean business

The Hawks stayed the course, in a steady drizzle today, to continue their section dominance with a 12-0 mercy victory over visiting St. Joes.

Chris Smith was called upon in the top of the 3rd to dig the Hawks out of a bit of a jam, with base's loaded and no one out. Chris struck out the first 3 batters he faced to go on and collect 5 strike outs on the day and save the win for the Hawks.

Brian Weightman put a solo shot over the fence in left center and 2 singles in the bottom of the 3rd. Triples came off the bats of Nick and Brandon, doubles from Jordan and Brett who had 2, and some single shots from Micheal, Chris and Tom Paulone who had 3.

The Hawks move to 2-0 in the conference and 5-1 overall and will travel to Springdale (1-1, 3-4) tomorrow for a 4:00 start.

Photos from the game can be seen right here.

Lady Jays handle powerhouse, South Park

Chelsea Sommers strategically placed 2 over the fence plus a double to end up going 3 for 4 in a 9-0 victory over South Park.

Samantha also went 3 for 4 with Kirstie, Lauren M. and Lauren B. each finishing 2 of 4 attempts to put the Lady Jays in second place in the conference at 3-1, 4-2 overall.

Tomorrow the Lady Jays will host GCC for a 4:15 start.

The wait was worth it!

It may have took a while for the Lady Jays to be able to play on the new field, but the wait was worth it.

Katherine Fey pitched a no hitter and recorded 7 strikeouts, in a perfect 10-0 romp, of the Lady Ironmen of Steel Valley, to break in the new field, "the right way".

Corinn tripled and doubled in the bottom of the second inning, where the Lady Jays did most of their damage, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead. Singles came from Kirstie, Samantha (who also doubled), Lauren B. and Chelsea.

Next up, the Lady Jays will travel to South Park on the 14th for a 4:15 start.

Photos from today's home opener, can be seen right here.

Mash tosses 12 strikeouts in section opener win

The name Micheal Mash might not be known world wide yet, but some day it might just be. Micheal continues his phenomenal season of pitching today, throwing 12 strikeouts to help lift the Jayhawks over Leechburg by a final of 8-3, in the section opener.

The Hawks will return to action next Tuesday when they host St. Joe's for a 4:15 start.

Hawks mercy Monessen

It's a balmy 36 degrees here in Jeannette and snowing (this is not a typo), but that didn't cool down the heat coming off the Jayhawks bats today.

The Hawks rebounded nicely from Saturdays loss to Geibel with a mercy rule, 10-0 shutout of Monessen.

Brett Elliott threw a complete shutout on the mound today, while the offense was getting plenty of hits to support his pitching efforts.

Tomorrow, (weather providing), the Hawks will make up the game against Vincentian at home.

THANK YOU and GO JAYHAWKS

Lady Jays rebound nicely

Some outstanding pitching and an explosive 3rd inning made for an impressive rebound game for the Lady Jays as they handed East Allegheny their second straight section loss today by a final of 10-0.

Kelsie started the 3rd with a lead off bunt, Lauren B. put a shot into left field to load 2 runners on the bags, and then 4 consecutive doubles from Chelsea, Kirstie, Lauren M. and Corinn, catapulted the Lady Jays to a 5-0 lead. Samantha singled bringing home another run and Kelsie added the 5th double and 7th run of the inning.

The Lady Jays added a run for each of the remaining innings to finish off at 10.

Tomorrows match up against Charleroi has been canceled so the girls will resume play on Tuesday at home when they host South Allegheny, for what hopefully will finally be the home opener.

And yes folks I know it's been a while, so here are some photos of today's game.

Hawks squeeze in a win

After 3 straight postponed games, Vincention, Charleroi and Geibel, the Hawks were able to finally squeeze one in today, at South Allegheny.

Last season the Hawks suffered losses in both meetings with the Gladiators, 6-3 at SA and 11-5 at home. This season however, the Hawks have started to turn the tables.

Heavy bats including 3 hits (one a triple), from Tom Paulone, a double off the bat of Brian Weightman and a homer from Brett Elliott, helped lead the Hawks to a 10-3 win over SA, and to a 2-0 overall start on the season.

The Hawks will try to get in a make up game against Geibel this Saturday at noon and then resume the regular schedule on Monday with a home game against Monessen set for 4:15.

Geibel game rescheduled

Ah...Spring sports in Pa.

The boys game against Geibel was rescheduled to this Saturday the 4th at noon, due to the wonderful spring weather in Pa.

Home opener, turns into road loss

What should have been the home opener at Jeannette, turned out to be a road loss for the Lady Jays at Mt. Pleasant.

A delay in the construction of the new field averted yesterdays home game to Mt. Pleasant where the Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Jays by a final of 7-4. Jeannette starts the season at 0-1 in conference and falls to 1-2 overall.

The girls resume play at East Allegheny this Thursday the 2nd with a 4:00 start.
