"Off day" disrupts the Hawks

Sorry for the delay guys, I took momma to dinner and a movie. I'm thinking it was my way of dealing with the loss. I figured we go see the movie, "Fired Up". I don't know, it seemed appropriate. And although it didn't really get me fired up, it did provide plenty of laughter, and I guess after all, that's the medicine I was looking for.

Yeah the championship would have been perfect, for the season the Hawks had, but runner up isn't too shabby either. North Catholic Trojans played a good solid game on defense and offense and deserve to be the champions, no question there. NC upset the Hawks by a final of 51-44.

But, I also believe the Hawks may have beat themselves in this match up, having an "off day" shooting only 35% from the field, 19 of 54 attempts, and only landing 2 of 18 from the three point range. Jordan and Moziah each managed 15 points a piece, while Dane, Cameron, and Phatman could only arrange for 4 points a piece.

Either way guys, Congratulations!, it was an awesome run for the WPIAL Championship with a ton of great moments like this one today:

And I'm sure we'll see more of those moments as you prepare to make a run for the State Championship. Photos from the game can be seen here.

Congratulations Hawks! I couldn't be any prouder of you guys!!

Hawks advance to final round!

A strong finish to a slow start propel the Hawks to the final round of the WPIAL playoffs.

Jordan was held to only 8 points in the first half, (18 on the night), as the Hawks defeated the Lions of South Fayette for a second straight season, by a final of 53-48, and will advance to the final round to face the Trojans of North Catholic. North Catholic defeated Monesson earlier tonight by a final of 65-58.

These two teams met last season at Hempfield for a PIAA quarterfinal game, where Jeannette defeated North Catholic by a final of 86-60. And this battle didn't end on the court, it was carried over into the locker rooms, with both teams being put on probation.

Saturdays highly anticipated final round game, will be at the A. J. Palumbo center and is slated for a 1:00 tip off. Good Luck Hawks!!

Directions to Baldwin High School

The Hawks will face South Fayette this Wednesday for a 8:00 tip off, below are directions to Baldwin High School. The South Fayette and Seton LaSalle girls teams will play the 6:00 game.

New Lady Jay Apparel!!

Below is the order form with the info needed for ordering this new apparel. You can click on image and print it out to put in your order.

Hawks advance to semifinals

Jordan Hall sunk 4 shots from the arc, and 2-2 from the foul line on his way to game high of 24 points to advance the Jayhawks into the semifinal round of the WPIAL AA Playoffs, with a 62-36 win over Quaker Valley.

In The House!

In the house for today's game, Terrelle Pryor watched as strong performances, from Dane (10 points) and Moziah (8 points), from under the rim, helped seal the deal. Rounding out the scoring for the Hawks was "Phatman" with 11, Cameron with 5, and Brian with 4.

On Wednesday Feb. 25th, the Hawks will face their toughest challenge this season when they meet South Fayette (21-3), for the semifinal round. Site and time to be determined.

Beaver Falls got bumped out of the race by Monessen, 56-52. And North Catholic defeated Aliquippa by a final of 53-45, these two teams will face off on Wednesday also.

Photos from the game can be seen here.

Call 911, The Lady Jays were robbed!!!!!

Is there a governing agency that looks over officiating at high school events? Someone that we could go to, to question the credentials of some of these officials, or see if they are licensed properly and that they are even up to date? Maybe we should pick our officials like they pick jurors in a court of law, or maybe they ought to implement the "Red Flag" system, so that Coach Vertacnik could at least have had a shot at challenging these redundant calls, that we all seen today.

Not to take anything away from Our Lady of Sacred Heart, because, yes they are a good team, and they are loaded with talent, But when 29 of their 60 total points come from the foul line, doesn't that raise an eyebrow or two? OLSH made 29 of 41 attempts from the foul line. 41 folks, Now maybe it's just me, but that seems a little high for a girls basketball game. (The Lady Jays were 14 of 24 from the foul line, in case you were wondering)

The Lady Jays, with a "little help" from the officials, in a game that was tied 22 a piece at the half mark, end up losing a tough one today by a final of 60-46, to end their battle for the WPIAL gold.

Kayla scored game high of 21, including 2 shots from the arc. Shanae scored 14, Lauren went 4-5 from the foul line to claim her 4 points, Kirstie sunk 4, and Samantha landed 3 from the foul line to finish out the scoring.

The Lady Jays were one of the top eight finishers in the WPIAL, so now they will wait to see who they face first in the PIAA State playoffs.

Photos from the game can be seen here.

PS: I'm not whining folks, I'm only telling you what me and about 1,400 other people seen, and I wish OLSH the best of luck through out the playoffs, so please keep the bad emails to yourselves.

Live Broadcast of the Quarterfinals Today

Today's quarterfinal basketball games can both be heard live on MSA Sports Network.

The first game, set for 1:00, with the Lady Jays and Our Lady of Sacred Heart Lady Chargers can be heard here on the OLSH Network. This is OLSH's own sports network and is broadcast through the MSA Network, covering a variety of sports from OLSH.

The second game of the afternoon, set for 2:30, with the Jayhawks and Quaker Valley can be heard live, as always, with Brent and Don from SAM FM, right here with a 2:00 pregame show.

AN EXPERIENCED WARRIOR.....

Basketball coaches in high school and in college always talk about how an experienced Point Guard is the key to a deep run in the playoffs. If that is the case, no team has a better shot at a state title than the Jeannette Boys Basketball team.

Heading into Saturday's game with Quaker Valley at Plum High School, Jeannette Senior Point Guard Jordan Hall has started in 21 playoff games, far and away above any player in the WPIAL. His teams are 18-3 in those playoff games, with one of those losses coming to Jeannette when Jordan played at Southmoreland his freshman year. Jordan has also averaged around 13 points per game in postseason contests over his four years. Below is a look at Jordan's playoff career.....

Jeannette Stimulus Package

Directions to Plum High School

I don't want anyone to miss this "double header" on Saturday, so for those that need them, here are directions to Plum High School:

376 East to Plum Exit. Follow the orange belt. At second stop sign, bear to the right (still following the orange belt). You will pass main entrance to Boyce Park. At stop sign at the bottom of the hill, make a right on Route 380. Make a left on New Texas Road. New Texas Road ends. Make a right on Leechburg Road (Nesbit Bowling Lanes will be in front of you on your left). Make a left on Elicker Road.

A NATIONAL HOLIDAY.....

By the power invested in the Jayhawk Hacker, I am declaring Saturday, February 21st a holiday in the City of Jeannette. All businesses should be closed, all activities canceled, and all doors locked up. Let's head down to Plum and celebrate the continuing of the City of Champions.

I just heard on the radio that both the Jeannette girl's basketball team and the boy's basketball team will be playing quarterfinal playoff games at Plum on Saturday. The Lady Jays will start the doubleheader against Our Lady of Sacred Heart at 1pm and then the guys will take on Quaker Valley at 2:30.

What a day this will be for Jeannette Senior High School, the community, and us rabid Jeannette fans. I wanna see the purple of Plum overwhelmed by Jayhawk red. When the Quaker Valley fans show up three minutes before tip-off, I want there to be nowhere for them to sit. Both the Lady Jays and the Jayhawks have had outstanding seasons and they deserve our support. Who votes to start the tailgate party at 8am??? Ok it's a Saturday so maybe noon!!

Hawks roll into quarter finals, with ease.

12 days off didn't phase the Jayhawks. Last night they made easy work of the Rochester Rams in a lopsided win, 62-28. And used most of that game to prepare for Quaker Valley in the quarter final round set for this Saturday.

Scoring Summary:
  • Jordan - 26
  • Moziah - 19
  • Cameron - 7
  • Dane - 6
  • Fatman - 2
  • Toddy - 2
Photos from the game can be seen here.
Both brackets girls and boys, have been updated.

Boys First Round, Live Tonight!

Standout Trio, prepare for Championship

Jeannette has had some great wrestlers in the past, guys like Matt Lebe, Larry Hall and A.J. Graves just to name a few standouts. But a recent trio of Jeannette wrestlers have emerged to claim their respected spot on that list as well.

They are Ian Thom (103#, record 23-3), Michael DePalma (125#, record 23-3) and Anthony Deni (215#, record 20-9). On Saturday Feb.14th, these 3 all placed first in the WPIAL class AA section tournament at Charlerioi (I'm told, (and this is unconfirmed) that this is the first time since 1974 that Jeannette presented 3 section champions) which will advance them to the WPIAL championships on this Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21 at Chartiers Valley.

Click on image for full story on these 3 standouts, in the Trib

The schedule for WPIAL AA Championships at Chartiers Valley are:
2/20: Weigh-ins - 4:00 PM, Bouts begin - 5:00 PM
2/21: Weigh-ins - 9:00 AM, Bouts begin - 10:00 AM

Good Luck and Congratulations Guys!!

Lady Jays set sights on the Quarter Finals

How bout them Lady Jays?!!

In a very convincing and exceptionally well played defensive game, the Lady Jays were able to bump Ford City (20-3) out of the playoffs, by a final score of 39-27.

Part of Ford City's game plan was to take Kayla Cook and her 21.2 ppg average, out of the picture completely. And for the most part they did just that. Kayla only scored 8 points in the contest and went 4 of 6 from the free throw line, but was phenomenal on defense and in the rebounding category. But in focusing all your energy on one person, you have a tendency to overlook the others.

Shanae Daye has been quietly making her mark on the team all season, and been finding a way to somehow, always get open under the net and tonight she scored the game high of 12 points, most from under the net. Lauren Maline went 3 of 3 from the foul line and landed 2 easy buckets from the arc to score 9 on the night.

Kirstie Cortazzo sunk a 3-pointer, Samantha, Tanesha & Shavon each added 2 a piece and Shanice finished it off with 1. And although these numbers don't show the "preferred offensive performance", that I'm sure these girls would have wanted, they more than made up for it on defense, trust me!

Over in South Park tonight, (not the cartoon on Comedy Central), Our Lady of Grace (17-7) handed Shady Side Academy a first round loss 49-30 and will meet our Lady Jays in the quarterfinal round. (site, time and date to be determined).

And on a worthy note: Washington knocked off Greensburg Central Catholic tonight in a first round match up by a final of 52-50. :~)

WPIAL AA First Round, Live

J.B.A. 2009 Registration

Although registration has already begun, you can still register for the 2009 season at the Jeannette Middle School Lobby on the following dates, February 21st from 10am-2pm and at the JBA Field House on March 7th from 10am-2pm.

You can download and print out the registration form here and get more info on the program here.

Lady Jays Advance to First Round

With only 25 ticks left on the clock, and down by 3 points, 47-44, who would you turn to in a clutch moment, to lift your team?

5'-9" senior, "I'll make a 3 pointer whenever you need one", Lauren Maline, that's who!

Lauren landed, by far, the biggest "nothing but net" 3-pointer of her career to tie the game at 47 all and pave the way for Kayla Cook to seal the deal, and give the Lady Jays a 49-47 win over Beth Center.

Beth Center scored 13 unanswered points in the first period and took control of the game right out of the gates (17-6 at the end of the 1st period). They amassed a whopping 16 straight points in the first half before Jeannette was able to answer back. (30-18 at the half mark). Jeannette finally got a grip on the game, with an explosive second half. Jeannette outscored Beth Center 13-3 in the 4th period comeback to advance in the playoffs.

Scoring Summary:
  • Kayla - 24
  • Lauren - 11
  • Shanae - 8
  • Shanice - 4
  • Kirstie - 2
Jeannette will advance to meet Ford City (20-2) at Shaler High School, on Tuesday for a 6:30 tip off.

A LOOK AHEAD.....

Jeannette Boy’s Basketball Coach Jim Nesser will be at Ringgold Saturday to watch Rochester battle Burgettstown. The winner of the Saturday afternoon game will play Jeannette next Tuesday or Wednesday at a sight and time to be determined. Here’s a little scouting report, courtesy of the Hacker.

Burgettstown is 15-7 on the season and they finished the year with a 10-4 record in Section 5, where they finished behind Washington and Monessen. The Blue Devils average about 62 points per game and allow about 52 a contest. They were 7-5 against WPIAL playoff teams this year, including nice wins over Monessen, Lincoln Park, and Carmichaels. Monessen is the only common opponent between Burgettstown and Jeannette. The Blue Devils beat the Greyhounds in Monessen 67-53 but lost at home 63-58. The Jayhawks, meanwhile, beat Monessen 62-59 on the road, way back in December. Burgettstown has some size inside with 6’5 junior Kevin Bielecki and 6’4 forward Tyler Lonchar. Bielecki is the team’s leading scorer at about 15 ppg and he also averages nearly ten rebounds a contest.

Rochester is 13-7 this year and finished in 3rd place in Section 2 with a 7-5 conference mark. The Rams score about 58 points per game and allow about 53. The Rams are 8-4 this season against WPIAL playoff teams, including two wins over Quaker Valley, who is a sleeper pick in AA. The Rams do not have one player that stands out but Junior Point Guard Trey Johnson, Sophomore Shooting Guard Jason Adamson, and Sophomore Swing Man E.J. Blackwell all average in double figures. As you can tell, the Rams are a young team and as with most young teams they look terrific at times and terrible at others. They seem to play to the level of competition but they are capable of winning any night.

That said, the Hacker is going to go with Burgettstown, although it’s really too close to call. I just think the inside game may be too much to handle. Burgettstown, by the way, is close to the West Virginia border, so if they do win, expect a game at Baldwin or somewhere around the outskirts of Pittsburgh.

First Round Playoff Pairings

The pairings have been announced and here's the results:

The undefeated section 4 champs, Jayhawks, have earned themselves a first round bye.

The Lady Jays who lost a meaningless game to Derry last night by a final of 62-53, will meet Beth Center (14-7) this Saturday at Southmoreland for a 3:00pm tip off.

Cheer of the Year 2009

Ok you Jayhawk nuts, I need your help. Or actually,... the cheerleaders need your help. They have been entered into WPXI's Cheer of the Year for 2009 and they need your votes to secure the top spot.

So why are you still here reading this? Head over to WPXI and vote for the Jayhawk Cheerleaders, you can vote as many times as you can, but I'd like you to vote until your fingers fall off!

THE ROY HALL ERA BEGINS....

The Hall family has led several Jeannette football teams on the field and now a Hall will lead the Jayhawks from the sidelines. The Jeannette School Board, Monday night, took little time in naming Roy Hall the new Head Football Coach in Jeannette and what an easy decision it was.

Coach Hall graduated from Jeannette Senior High School in 1982 and was a member of the outstanding Jayhawk teams of the early 80’s. He played offensive and defensive line for the 1981 WPIAL Championship team and had a big fumble recovery against Freeport in the title game. He was also an outstanding wrestler, before heading off to CAL U. He returned to Jeannette shortly and began his coaching career at the midget level before joining the high school staff in 1984.

Since that time Roy has coached about every position at Jeannette. For years he was the offensive and defensive line coach and Head Coach of the Junior High team. When Coach Reitz took over, Coach Hall moved over and began working with the quarterbacks. He has also had a lot to do with the offensive philosophy for the Hawks in the last few years.

Off the football field is where Coach Hall may have done the most good for the Jayhawk nation. For the past decade, Roy and his wife Patty have opened their garage and their home to Jayhawk players looking to work out. In today’s high school game, it is impossible to be successful without a weight training program but, thanks to Roy’s Gym, Jeannette has that program.

I can’t remember a Jeannette sporting event where I haven’t seen Coach Hall sitting in the last row of the bleachers with his back up against the wall. A wrestling match Monday night, a boys basketball game Tuesday night, a baseball game Wednesday, a girls bball game Thursday, and a golf match on Friday, Coach Hall can be seen at them all, well maybe not the golf match. He deserves the job and the Jayhawk Hacker applauds the school board for not even considering another candidate.
MUCCI > TRAGESSER > MURPHY > REITZ > HALL
THE LEGACY CONTINUES

Roy Hall named head coach

The School Board tonight hired Roy Hall as the new head coach of the Jayhawks. This move was expected by many here in Jeannette, with the knowledge and love for the program and kids, that Roy possesses.

Congratulations Roy, and here's to a successful 2009 season!

Undefeated Section Champs!

Claiming the Section Championship wasn't enough for the Hawks. They wanted to claim it while maintaining an undefeated record, and to finish the section off in style against rival, GCC. And they did just that, and I might add...without Terrelle Pryor!

The Hawks defeated the Centurions in front of a packed house, by a final of 70-59. Jordan Hall, who was honored for achieving 1,000 points in his career and signing with Ohio State, landed 9 of 10 shots from the foul line and three 3 pointers to score game high of 28. Moziah Harris with an explosive second half and landing 5 of 6 attempts from the foul line, finished the night with 19. Dane Vaughan was outstanding under the rim all night and finished off with 11 points.

The Hawks will now patiently wait to see where they'll be seeded, and who they'll meet first in the post season, when the WPIAL meets on Tuesday, Feb. 10th at 7:00pm. And I'll have that info for you right here on the site, as soon as it's announced. Check the site on Tuesday night!

Photos from the game can be seen here.

And how about one more ride on the rollercoaster? GCC loves it!

"Threepeat" T-Shirts

Here's a look at what the "Threepeat" T-Shirts will look like and once again you can get these at the game tonight against GCC.
  • SM - XL = $12.00
  • 2X = $13.50
  • 3X = $14.00

Lady Jays settle for 2nd, still my champs though!

The last section championship or co championship for the Lady Jays was 23 years ago, back in 1986. And any hopes of ending that streak tonight, on senior night, were completely washed away, unfortunately in tears.

In a heart breaker ending, a final of 62-61, the Lady Centurions stripped the Lady Jays of a possible co-championship in section 4, having to settle for 2nd place and a section record of 11-3.

The Lady Centurions at 11-2 have one section game remaining on the schedule against 3-9 Riverview, who they destroyed earlier in the season 87-47. So all indicators point to GCC finishing the section at 12-2 and tied with Shady Side for co-champions.

Kayla cook landed 8 of 12 attempts from the foul line and a 3 pointer at the buzzer to score game high of 29. The only celebrated senior on the team, Lauren Maline, scored 9 and was outstanding on the "D". Kirstie, Shanae and Samantha each added 6 a piece, and Tatiana rounded it off, landing 5.

The only thing we can do now Lady Jays, is shake this loss off. I know it's a tough one, but you got way bigger fish to fry in the playoffs, and you need to get focused on that. We'll take care of GCC next season, or maybe in the playoffs! And besides, your still champions to all of us!

Photos from the game can be seen here.

Congratulations to Lauren Maline, may you find success in all that you pursue!

THE COMEBACK IS ALMOST COMPLETE

Wednesday was national signing day around the country and several Jayhawk players signed on with various schools at various levels. One Jayhawk player who faxed a letter of intent to Slippery Rock University was actually a 2008 Jeannette graduate and a captain for the 2007 state championship team. Jerry Harris is back, better than ever, and ready to patrol the defensive backfield for "The Rock."

You may remember, Harris suffered a knee injury in the second football game of the 2007 season and missed the rest of the football campaign and the entire basketball season. Since then he has been rehabbing non-stop and Jerry is now one of the leading scorers for the Westmoreland County Community College basketball team.

Before his knee injury Jerry was an outstanding running back/defensive back with great speed and great hitting ability. He was being looked at by a number of Division One schools, including Indiana University where he would have played against Terrelle Pryor. Then a lazy hit to the legs after a nice run against Washington changed Jerry's plans.

After the injury, Jerry became the number one cheerleader for his football and basketball teammates. He never missed a game, rarely missed a practice, and led both teams even though he was not in uniform. Then in the state basketball playoffs, with Jeannette leading Kane by 40 points, Harris got a chance to get back on the court. The Jayhawk faithful gave Jerry a standing ovation but that was just the start of his comeback.

For WCCC this season, Jerry scored 16 points and added 11 rebounds against PSGA. He scored 19 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and added 4 blocks against Lorain Community College. More importantly the knee has passed the test.

Next season, Harris will play for Slippery Rock where Coach George Mihalik plans to use him as either a safety or a cornerback. Coach Mihalik knows he is getting a great player with great speed but he is also getting a great person with a tremendous heart. Good Luck Jerry and the Jayhawk Nation is behind you!!!!!

Jordan signs with the Buckeyes

It's official! Jordan will head west to reunite with Terrelle in the fall as a Ohio State Buckeye.

Jordan averaged 8.5 yards per carry for the Jayhawks, was three-time all-conference, rushed for 946 yards and 18 TD's as a senior, along with 266 receiving yards and 3 TD's and 3 scores on returns. As a junior Jordan averaged 8.3 yards per carry and rushed for 891 yards and 20 TD's along with 703 receiving yards and 10 TD's. Was one of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Terrific 25 and player of the year. One of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Fabulous 22 two years straight. Super Prep Pennsylvania Top 25. All-state basketball player and 1,000-point scorer.

With Jordan in the line up the Hawks were 14-2 and WPIAL champs, and the state runner-up his sophomore year, 16-0 and state champs as a junior, and 10-2 as a senior.

Congratulations Jordan, and all the best to you!

Section 4 Championship T-Shirts!!

With the win at East Allegheny last night, the Jayhawks have sealed the deal on the championship of section 4 AA for the third straight season.

And in honor of this outstanding achievement, you'll be able to purchase a limited edition and limited quantity t-shirt acknowledging this achievement.

I don't have a photo of what they look like, sorry, but I hear they're pretty darn nice. You'll be able to purchase them at the game this Friday, Feb.6 against GCC. The cost for the shirts are:
  • Small - XL - $12.00
  • 2X - $13.50
  • 3X - $14.00
Once again, these are of limited quantity so bring a little extra money to game to be able to secure your piece of Jayhawk history.

Steelers Superbowl Parade Pics

A little something extra for you today. We have a Jayhawker who works in downtown Pittsburgh, and she was kind enough to venture out onto Grant street yesterday to capture some images from the Steelers Superbowl Parade for us, and you can check them out right here!

Steeler Nation Video

Here's a video that was sent in that speaks in volume of the history of the Steeler Nation, and even a little history about Pittsburgh. It is about 22 minutes long, and is very interesting.

As the Lady Jays enter the home stretch of the regular season with only 2 games remaining on their schedule, we'll try to bring into perspective how section 4 can possibly unfold to determine the champions.

The scenario's are of many, and anyone of these 3 can be crowned section champs or at least share the crown, so let's start with the current standings in the section.

Shady Side Academy and Jeannette currently share the top spot with equal records of 11-2, followed closely by Greensburg Central Catholic at 10-2. The remaining games for each team are:
  • Shady Side - 2/5/09 Wilkinsburg (conference)
  • GCC - 2/5/09 Jeannette (conference), 2/6/09 Riverview (conference), and 2 non conference games
  • Jeannette - 2/5/09 GCC (conference), 2/9/09 Derry (non conference)
For the Lady Jays to secure the top spot alone, they'll need to defeat GCC this Thursday and receive a little help from Wilkinsburg in defeating Shady Side, also this Thursday.

The worst case scenario, would be Jeannette settling for second place in the conference. This would be the result of a Jeannette loss to GCC and then GCC winning out their remaining section game against Riverview, to share the top spot with Shady Side, providing Shady Side defeats Wilkinsburg on Thursday. Should Shady Side lose to Wilkinsburg, then GCC would claim the top spot alone, with wins over Jeannette and Riverview, and Jeannette and Shady Side would then share the second spot.

Confused?.... Yeah, me too! To have it all make sense, Jeannette needs to win over GCC to claim a share of the top spot with Shady Side, because I don't think Shady Side is gonna have any problems with Wilkinsburg. Hopefully I'm wrong and Wilkinsburg defeats Shady Side, in which case Jeannette would secure the top spot alone, with a win over GCC this Thursday.

If you are still confused, then just come up to the high school at 7:30 on Feb. 5, and cheer on the Lady Jays, trust me...you'll be doing the right thing, and all of this will come into focus for you!
