Twas the Night before the Super Bowl

This was sent in to the site in time for the big game. I'm not sure where it originated from, but I love it and I think you will too!

Twas the Night Before the Super Bowl when along the gulf shore,
Steeler fans were praying for “just one more;”

The players were nestled all snug in the sack,
With visions of the first NFL Six-Pack;

Coach Tomlin was young, but wise for his years,
So I drifted off to sleep without any fears;

When at the stadium there arose some strange chatter,
The Cardinals feared, what was the matter;

We heard “Okel Dokel”, we heard “Double Yoi,”
We jumped from our beds, our hearts jumped for joy;

He stood at the fifty with a grin ear to ear,
Steeler fans everywhere started to cheer;

Then in an instant to our surprise,
This little old man had tears in his eyes;

He went to the booth and there took his chair,
While Terrible Towels waved high in the air;

Then over the airwaves came his shrill voice,
The Steelers Nation began to rejoice;

He said, “I am back, but you know I can’t stay,
I just had to see my Steelers play;

From my home up above, I have a great view,
But I wanted to celebrate down here with you;

So bring on the Birds, we’ll send them a flyin’,
On the way back to Phoenix, they will be cryin’

Ben, Hines, Troy, Jeff and all of the rest,
No matter the outcome, to me you’re the best;”

The airwaves went silent, the stadium still,
Was this just a dream, it seemed so real;

In our team we have faith, in our team we have hope,
But the game’s not the same without Myron Cope.

Hawks meltdown the Ironmen

Jordan Hall landed five shots from the arc on his way to game high of 24 points, in a 63-42 senior night sectional win, over the Ironmen of Steel Valley tonight.

The Hawks will travel to East Allegheny on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd and finish off the regular season at home against GCC on Friday, Feb. 6th.

Photos from senior night can be seen here.

Senior Night Changed!!

Senior night for the boys will take place at tonight's match up against Steel Valley, NOT at the GCC match up on Feb. 6th.

Sorry for the short notice but I just found out myself!

Lady Jays prep for the final run

The Lady Jays performance, appears to be peaking at just the right time.

Shanae Daye stepped up to the plate and acquired 12 points in the first period alone, on her way to the game high of 22, including 2 from the arc and 2-2 from the foul line, to hand Riverview an 81-53 loss last night.

Also adding double digits to the win was Kayla Cook with 16 and Lauren Bosley with 12.

The Lady Jays however, have a tough road ahead of them. In two of the last three games on the season, the Lady Jays will have to face rival section schools. Starting Monday, Feb. 2nd when they travel to East Allegheny (8-4) for a 7:30 tip off, and then again on Feb. 5th when they host GCC (9-2) on senior night. Shady Side definitely has the easier road ahead. They have four games remaining and two are also of section importance, but they are against Springdale (4-8), and Wilkinsburg (4-8).

Not an easy road for the Lady Jays, but definitely a manageable one!

Rounding out the scoring for last nights match up:
  • Shavon & Lauren M. - 7
  • Shanice - 6
  • Mary & Samantha - 5
Photos from the game can be seen here.

Hawks roll to easy win

I can only imagine that with 4 games left in their season, Derry Area can hardly wait, for that last game to get here.

Derry, a AAA team, is (1-16) overall and 0-9 in their respectable section 3. But before you judge their performance you should know that they are in the same section as powerhouse Greensburg Salem (6-2), Indiana (6-2), Laurel Highlands (6-2), and Uniontown (6-3).

Now if that isn't tough enough, last night Derry hosted the Jayhawks in a non sectional match up, and things didn't look any better for the Trojans.

As expected, Jeannette rolled to an easy win against Derry by a final of 73-31 and moved to (16-3) overall, the JV squad also secured the easy win, 61-31.

Tonight the Hawks will host Steel Valley for a 7:30 section tip off.

Win some, lose some!

Due to the inclement weather here in Western Pa. several basketball games were postponed tonight until a later date. But not here in J-town. What's that saying? "The show must go on!".

This was good for the Jayhawks but not so good for the Lady Jays.

The Jayhawks "slid" into Wilkinsburg and handed the Tigers another sectional loss, 67-57. JV Jayhawks were also successful tonight, winning by a final of 54-43.

The Lady Jays however, in a non-sectional match up against a very impressive Kittanning squad, found themselves down by 20 points, and even with a late 4th period rally, were only able to close that gap by 10, losing by a final of 58-48.

Kayla scored game high 24 points, Shanae added 10, Lauren Maline landed 2 from the arc for 6, Tatiana sunk 4, with Samantha and Dominique rounding it out with 2 a piece. JV Lady Jays found success tonight though, winning by a final of 31-19.

Up Next: The Jayhawks travel to Derry this Thursday, while the Lady Jays will host Riverview on the same night. Both games are slated for a 7:30 tip off.

Photos from the Lady Jays game can be seen on the media site.

Dallas coach loses job

The Dallas Covenant girls basketball coach, who's team defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Dallas Academy, 100-0, is fired. Full article here.

Lady Jays move into tie for top spot

The Lady Jays defeated Springdale last night by a final of 61-51. Kayla Cook scored a game-high 22 points to lead Jeannette and Shanae Daye added 18 points.

And in a sharp turn of events last night, the Lady Jays got a little help from GCC to move into a tie for the top spot in section 4 with Shady Side at 9-2. The Lady Centurions handed Shady Side Academy their second section loss of the season, 67-57. Lauren DePalma (GCC) scored a game-high 24 points.

Tonight at 7:30, the Lady Jays will host Kittanning for a make up game from Jan. 6th

A message from the space station

Who's the real winner, here?

Here's a "feel good" story, but it also doubles as a potential warning to those coaches who refuse to pull their starters when they are up by an "embarrassing" amount of points.

The Dallas Academy Lady Bulldogs lost to powerhouse Covenant School by a final of 100-0. When this embarrassing loss surfaced and caught the attention of the media, and only when, Covenant issued an apology on their website. To me this is too little, too late, but you can decide for yourselves.

Hawks secure post season spot

The Hawks remain perfect in section play at 8-0 and have secured a spot in the post season, after a sluggish first half start at Shady Side Academy, with a 64-39 win.

After scoring a modest 21 points in the first half, the Hawks exploded in the second half scoring 43 additional points. Dane Vaughan gave a 12 point 4th period performance, and finished the night with 15, to help secure the win for the Hawks. Jordan landed three 3 pointers and a game high of 23 points. Moziah, who acquired 3 fouls in the first period, ended the night with only 6 points after fouling out of the game in the 4th period.

The Hawks will travel to Wilkinsburg on Tuesday the 27th, for a 7:30 tip off. JV also pulled out a victory tonight with a final score of 36-33.

Hawks roll to an easy win

The Hawks jumped out to a 24-9 lead by the end of the first period, and a 45-15 lead at the half mark to silence the Gladiators of South Allegheny with a final of 70-31.

Jordan landed 3 shots from the arc and finished off the night with 13 points, Dane Vaughan earned 14 the hard way with an exceptional performance under the rim. But the game high honors go to Moziah who ended with 18 on the night.

The Hawks move to 7-0 in section play and set the stage for the rescheduled match up against 7-1 Shady Side Academy tomorrow at 5:30, JV's tip off at 4:00. This game can be heard live on the MSA Sports network with the pregame starting at 5:20.

All hands on deck!

The Lady Jays made easy work of 0-16 South Allegheny tonight to keep pace with Shady Side Academy at the top of the conference. Coach Vertacnik was able to rotate all the Lady Jays in on the action in tonight's 79-29 win, with outstanding efforts under the rim from freshmen Dominique Hall and junior Tanesha Bone. The JV team was just as successful with a 50-17 final in their match up.

Scoring results from the varsity game:
  • Kayla-15
  • Kirstie-12
  • Shanae-11
  • Samantha & Chelsea-9
  • Shanice & Dominique-6
  • Lauren M.-5
  • Tanesha-4
  • Tatiana-2
Up next for the Lady Jays is a trip to Springdale on Monday for a 7:30 start. Photos from tonight's game can be seen on the media site.

A RAY OF LIGHT....

The Jayhawk family got a bit of bad news this week when Head Football Coach Ray Reitz decided to leave Jeannette to take the head job at Latrobe High School. With the economy the way it is, I think we can all understand why he made the move, but it was a tough Tuesday for the school, the city, and the Jayhawk nation.

Coach Reitz was born and raised in Jeannette and he truly bled red and blue. He was a solid high school player for the Jayhawks and was a sophomore on the 1971 WPIAL Championship team. After college stints at IUP and Slippery Rock, he began his coaching career under Jimmy Rankin at Ellwood City. Then 25 years ago he became an assistant coach at Jeannette.

During those 25 years, Jeannette has missed the playoffs only four times and Coach Reitz had a lot to do with that. He served as Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach, Defensive Line Coach, Defensive Ends Coach, and JV Head Coach over those 25 years and his players respected him at each position. He also was an assistant coach for the Boy’s Basketball team for a few years and he even coached the Lady Jays while at Jeannette.

We all know what Coach Reitz brought to Jeannette as the Head Coach, (a 48-6 record, two conference championships, two WPIAL championships, and the school’s first PIAA title), but what he did off the field was just as important. Coach Reitz and his family would never miss a Jeannette event, whether it was football related or not. You would spot the coach standing on Clay Avenue for a school picnic parade or at the beer tent for Jeannette Community Days. He never grew upset or impatient with constant questions about the upcoming season or what they were doing over there at Central.

Ray is a serious guy on the field but a rather humorous character off. He will let a player who misses a block know what he feels with a few choice words but he’ll also sit back and crack a few jokes. You should see him interact with referees or the neighborhood gardener Leon, it is hilarious.

The Jayhawk family wishes the best to Ray, his wife Diana, son Ryan, and daughter Renee on the new endeavor. The coach may be wearing a headset in Latrobe but something tells me his heart will remain in Jeannette.

Lady Jays cage the Tigers

Kirstie Cortazzo landed 7 of 8 attempts from the free throw line tonight to hand visiting Wilkinsburg their 6th sectional loss on the season.

The Lady Jays found themselves battling back from a deficit, once in the second period and again in the fourth, to finally capture and secure the win tonight over the Lady Tigers by a final of 49-36.

Kayla Cook had game high of 15, Kirstie and Shanae shared 9 a piece. Samantha Linsenbigler landed 4 of 4 from the foul line to end the night with 6 points, Lauren Maline added 4 and Tatiana, Tanesha and Shanice each added 2 a piece.

The Lady Jays will host another section match up this Thursday when South Allegheny pays a visit to J-town for a 7:30 tip off.

Latrobe acquires the best man for the job!

Not to steal the limelight from President Obama, but Jeannette got a little bit of big news today also.

Coach Reitz will not be returning to coach the Jayhawks next season, no, instead with a heavy heart he's decided the best course for him and his family is to accept the Coaching position that opened up at Latrobe. I'm told that this was one of the most difficult decisions he's ever had to make.

Coach, I'm sure I can speak for the entire Jayhawk nation in stating that you will be sadly missed, but also know that we all wish you the absolute very best in your new endeavor.

Look for the full story in tomorrows newspapers.

Schedule Changes to note

Just got a little info to pass on to you guys, there will be no girls JV game tonight or on Thursday, January 29 vs. Riverview. Both nights are Varsity only with 7 PM starts.

A LOOK AROUND CLASS AA....

Three weeks remain in the boy's basketball season and the Jayhawk Hacker likes the chances of Jeannette making it pretty far in the playoffs. Currently Jeannette is 12-3 overall and 6-0 in section play. The Jays are ranked 3rd in just about every poll but what else is going on around Double A??

Beaver Falls has been ranked number one from the start of the season and the Tigers have not disappointed. The team is 12-2 overall with the only losses coming to Quad A power Pittsburgh Central Catholic and Triple A rival Hopewell. The Tigers are also averaging 71 points per game, which is tops in Double A and senior Todd Thomas is one of the top scores in the WPIAL, averaging about 19 points per game.

Beaver Falls is number one in most polls but North Catholic is the only undefeated team in Double A. The Trojans are 12-0 overall, 7-0 in their section, and they have beaten quality opponents like South Fayette, Ambridge, and Woodland Hills. We remember this team from the 2008 state playoffs and much of their team is back this season. Jesse Long is the team’s leading scorer at about 18 a game but Henry Pwono is right behind at 15 per contest.

The Trojans will have a tough test coming up this Friday night when they play South Fayette on the road. The Lions are 13-3 overall and they have been playing very well of late. This past Saturday they dismantled Greensburg Central Catholic in Carbon by a score of 76-48. Sophomore Mike Lamberti leads the Lions in points, averaging about 16 a game.

Ford City (11-5), Mohawk (13-2), and Monessen (8-6) also are on tops in their particular sections. Quaker Valley (11-2), Washington (14-2), and New Brighton (11-3) are a few other teams to keep an eye on.

Double A will likely be the most wide open field in the WPIAL basketball playoffs again this year but if the Jayhawks play like they have recently, they will be right in mix with the other teams mentioned above and maybe a few sleepers like Fort Cherry and West Shamokin.

Oops, that Raven got in the way!!

Here We Go!!!

Schedule Change

Hey guys, just a quick note, I'm told the boys Shady Side game was moved to Saturday the 24th with a 5:30 tip off

Thomas Nets 1,000th Career Point

Senior guard Jordan Thomas went over the 1,000 career point mark with his first field goal as the Griffins defeated Charleston 57-49. Thomas' 1,000th point came on a jumper at the 11:13 mark of the first half. He is the second player in school history to go over the 1,000 point mark. The game was tight thru the first 11 minutes as both teams struggled from the field with the score tied at 9. The Griffins then went on a 15-4 run over the final 11 minutes to lead 24-13 at the half. The Griffins led the entire second half, except for the game being tied twice and went 10-10 from the line late to seal the win. Thomas led the Griffins with 21 points. Cody Boone scored 9 points and added 13 rebounds. Ivan Cosevic tossed in 8 and pulled down a game high 14 rebounds. The Griffins will host WV State on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM

Hawks move to 12-3 overall

In a non conference match up tonight, the Jayhawks handled visiting Holidaysburg, with a 69-50 victory.

A change to note: The Shady Side Academy game scheduled for tomorrow has been moved to Saturday.

Photos from the game can be seen on the media site.

Lady Jays fall from the top

For the second game in a row, Kayla Cook has been held to under 15 points. Tonight she managed a modest 14, and the Lady Jays was forced to relinquish the top spot in section 4 to Shady Side Academy.

SSA had a commanding lead at the half mark of 37-17 and continued to shine in the second half on their way to a 62-41 win, to claim the top spot.

A change to note: The Wilkinsburg game scheduled for Monday the 19th has been moved to Tuesday the 20th

Hawks remain undefeated in section play

GCC may have caught our Lady Jays off guard last night, but tonight the Hawks were having none of that business.

The Hawks remain undefeated in section play off the hot hands of Jordan Hall. Jordan sunk six 3 pointers on his way to the game high of 35 points and a 74-65 win over rival GCC. Moziah added 18, Cameron reached double digits with 11, Dane sunk in 6 and Greg and Lamar each added 2 points a piece.

The Hawks will take a break from section play to host Holidaysburg on Thursday the 15th for a 7:30 tip off.

A few photo's from the game can be seen at the media site. The JV squad were not to be denied a win either tonight, final in the JV game 45-37 Jayhawks

Lady Jays Cook-ing in First Half of Season

There’s a peculiar phenomenon taking place in Jeannette. No, it has nothing to do with the football team…not even the boys basketball team. These days, it is the Lady Jays who are making waves around town.

The Lady Jays are currently in sole possession of first place in Class AA Section 4, with a (6-0)(8-4) record. An outsider may think—big deal—they have gotten off to a great start this season. But what you will not see in those standings are the past struggles the Jeannette girls basketball team has endured over the years that make this season’s early success that much sweeter.

Unfortunately, the Jeannette girls basketball team does not share the storied history as do the football and boys basketball teams. Sure, the Lady Jays made a playoff appearance last season; but, prior to that, it had been nearly two decades. Although the postseason run was short-lived last season with a loss to Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL Class AA Preliminary Round, things look much brighter for the Lady Jays this time around.

Kayla Cook, a highly touted junior guard, leads the Lady Jays. Cook surpassed the 1,000-point plateau on December 30 against Laurel Highlands. Then, on January 5 against Riverview, Cook became Jeannette’s all-time leading scorer with 1,023 points—a record previously held by Lisa Abreu since 1987. Cook now sits at 1,056 points heading into tonight’s section showdown with Greensburg Central Catholic.

Lady Jays suffer first section loss

The Lady Jays suffered their first sectional loss last night to rival GCC, 74-50. The game was close at the half mark 31-27, but an explosive 2nd half by the Lady Centurions proved to be too much for the Lady Jays to overcome.

Kayla and Shanae shared game high at 12 a piece, followed by Samantha with 9, Lauren M. with 8, Kirstie with 7, and Shanice sinking 2.

The Lady Jays(6-1) now share the top spot in section 4 with Shady Side Academy(6-1), but that will change come Thursday when these two teams square off for a 7:30 start at EA. GCC(5-2) creeps into a tie with East Allegheny(5-2) for the 2nd spot in the section with this win but that won't last much longer either, as these two teams meet on Thursday evening also.

X-Jayhawk just shy of 1,000 points

The Seton Hill basketball team dropped to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in WVIAC play with a 102-69 home loss to West Liberty. After West Liberty jumped out to an early lead, the Griffins rallied to tie the game twice and took their only lead of the game at 15-14 on a layup by Jordan Thomas.

West Liberty went into the half with a 42-32 lead. Jordan Thomas, who scored 11 points in the first half, did not play in the second half because of an eye injury. West Liberty outscored the Griffins 60-37 in the second half. Conor Tilow scored a career high 13 points off the bench to lead the Griffins. Keith Cox added 12 and Thomas, who is 1 point shy of 1,000 career points, finished the game with 11. Cody Boone and Ivan Cosevic each tossed in 10. Boone also added 10 rebounds.

Jordan should reach the 1,000 point mark this Thursday evening when they host Charleston, providing the eye injury doesn't prevent him from playing.

Battle's In The 'Burg

Websters defines a rival as "one of two or more striving to reach or obtain something that only one can possess".

The rivalry between Greensburg Central Catholic and Jeannette carries over to just about any sport played between these two schools, with maybe the exception of Tennis. But I'm sure something is there as well.

I can't pin point a date when this rivalry began, but I can tell you that it has been around longer than me. I'm sure it originated during football season, that one is pretty much a given, but I've seen it during baseball and softball and now once again it is time for basketball's turn.

On Monday the girls will travel to GCC to face the 4-2 Lady Centurions for a 7:30 tip off. Jeannette is rolling into this game with a 6-0 section record and coming off a Hugh section win against East Allegheny, 53-52 in a 4th period comeback.

And then on Tuesday, the boys will have their meeting with the Centurions, also slated for a 7:30 tip off. Greensburg failed to find an answer on Friday night, for the shooting abilities of Eddie Sheerer from Shady Side Academy. Eddie scored the game high of 24 points including seven-3-pointers, to defeat GCC by a final of 61-53 in double overtime. So instead of a showdown for first place between GCC and Jeannette, the only event that GCC can hope for is a tie for first place in the section.

The Jayhawks will naturally have other intentions for the Centurions.

So in preparation for the "Battles in the 'Burg", I thought I'd leave you with some very interesting stats sent into the site from Rick Radebaugh. Not all these stats pertain to the rival, but are still of great interest. I want to thank Rick for taking the time to go through the history books and for sorting all this info out. My guess is Rick was very attentive while doing his homework in school, lol!

  • On Feb 10, 2006 Jeannette lost to Greensburg Central Catholic 83-65 at GCC. It has been almost 3 years since our last conference loss.
  • Our last home loss was almost five years ago on January 29, 2004 when we lost to Freeport 73-52
  • During the 2005-2006 season we played GCC 3 times, winning the first at the Greensburg Salem tournament, the second at home, and losing the third game at the GCC Gym (game above)
  • Jeannette is currently 60-1 in conference play since the start of the 2004-2005 season.

Steelers "D" Cover Shoot

Hawks capture top spot

Hawks take sole possession of first place in section 4 play with a 72-58 win over the Wildcats of East Allegheny tonight. GCC lost a heart breaker to Shady Side Academy 61-53 and fall to the #3 spot. Jordan Hall scored game high 26 points followed closely by Moziah Harris who collected 23.

But to focus on something that goes unmentioned mostly in the games, is the remarkable passing abilities and the uncanny acts of Darius "Fatman" Brown, to totally freeze the defenders while he makes an outstanding play to help out his team. I witness it at every game and believe it needs this well deserved attention.Fatman didn't score a single point tonight, but he is still my "player of the game". Watch him closely at the next game!

And here is a prime example of what "being graceful" really looks like:

Look for photos from the game, coming soon. JV also won this evening by a final of 42-26. The Hawks will continue this amazing section play on Tuesday when they travel up the road to visit GCC for a 7:30 tip off.

Davonte selected to All-Star team

Heavy was selected to the ECAC 2008 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) All-Stars Team. Other greats with this prestigious honor include, Pat White (WVU), LeSean McCoy (PITT), A.Q. Shipley (PENN STATE), & Donald Brown (UCONN). Official announcement can be read here.

THE HACKER IS BACKER......

Did you miss me?? I've been away for awhile but I'm back now and very excited about the remainder of the basketball season. Both the girls and boys have outstanding finishes ahead and it's a good time to be a Jayhawk fan.

I must say I made my way up to the high school Thursday night to catch a Lady Jays' game for the first time since I was in high school. I know, I jumped on the bandwagon, but it is unbelievable for me to see what has happened.

When I was in school, the gym would be packed with 20 to 30 fans, most of which were parents. Thursday night there was a crowd that would rival a boy's game.

When I was in school, the girls played as hard as they could but only managed about 30 points per game. Thursday night I was seeing three pointers go in from well beyond the arc and a number of fantastic passes.

When I was in school, if the Lady Jay's leading scorer had an off night, the team would have lost by 40 points. Thursday night Kayla struggled for three quarters but Lauren, Kristie, Shanae, and others picked up the slack.

When I was in school, Kayla Cook was about two years old. (Hint, Hint) Now she is one of the most clutch players I have seen play at Jeannette, regardless of gender. Big players step up in big games at big times and Kayla did that Thursday night.

I am in no way trying to trash the Lady Jays' teams of the past because they worked just as hard as the boy's teams but what the program has become is truly amazing. We have something special with this team and I am on the Coach V and Lady Jay bandwagon, so jump on board with me.

Lady Jays win big, I mean "BIG"

Kayla Cook's home acknowledgment of reaching the 1,000 point mark, wasn't the only excitement on the court tonight.

East Allegheny, with an impressive first half defensive stand, held Kayla to only 6 points in the first half. And all 6 of those points came from the foul line. But in the second half, the Lady Wildcats couldn't find an answer for this dynamic junior.

Kayla exploded in the second half for 13 points, to finish off the night with game high of 19. Her last 4 points of the evening, sealed the deal for the Lady Jays with a 53-52 win, in a "4th period edge of your seat, comeback". (see video below)

Kayla, who struggled through out the first half, misfired on her first 5 attempts, before eventually finding success via the foul line. But tonight's win was definitely a team effort and way more than just a strong dose of Kayla Cook. Lauren Maline helped her team out by sinking 3 buckets from the arch and collecting a total of 15 points on the night. Kirstie Cortazzo added a very welcomed 9 points, and was outstanding on the defensive end.

Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Jays, Samantha - 4, Shanae - 3, Lauren B. - 2, and Shanice - 1.

The Lady Jays remain undefeated (6-0) in section play, and will face 4th place GCC on Monday for a 7:30 tip off at GCC, and now in 2nd place, Shady Side Academy on the 15th. So the road doesn't get any easier for the girls, but it sure is nice traveling down it after a big win like tonight's.

Photo's from the game can be seen in the media section.

Drama Queens

We're only half way through the season, and already the drama in Section 4 is building. The stage was set when Shady Side Academy handed previously undefeated, East Allegheny their first loss of the season on the 5th, beating them by a final of 54-31, while the Lady Jays were over in Riverview, taking care of business to capture first place in the section.

Tonight at 7:00, (note new start time, JV game canceled), East Allegheny will try to get some of that lost ground back, from the Lady Jays. But this won't be an easy task for them.

The Lady Jays are on fire, right now. Junior Kayla Cook recently acquired the 1,000 point plateau, and is well on her way to setting a school record that just may be impossible for future Lady Jays to reach. She is currently setting at 1,037 which surpassed the previous mark of 1,023 set by Mrs. Abreu, and Kayla has quite a lot of basketball yet to go, in her young career. She currently leads the team in total points scored this season with 264.

Coming in at second in points scored for the Lady Jays is Shanae Daye with 137. Shanae added 19 to her total in the last match up with Riverview. I think it would be safe to consider Shanae the break out player of the season.

And if your thinking about fouling these girls to save your game, you should probably think again. The Lady Jays currently have 7 players who are shooting at and above 55.6% from the free throw line.

No matter the outcome of tonight's game, this drama will continue into Monday when the Lady Jays travel to GCC. The Lady Centurions are coming off a Hugh win against struggling South Allegheny, in what might be the highest scoring girls basketball game in WPIAL history, 101-30.

So the stage is set for an interesting 2nd half to section 4 play and I don't think you'll want to miss this!

Hawks remain undefeated in section play

The girls may have canceled tonight, but not the boys. The Hawks win big over Steel Valley tonight by a final of 67-40 and move to 4-0 in section play. Steel Valley is still looking for their first section win at 0-4.

Next up for the Hawks, is East Allegheny at home this Friday the 9th with a 7:30 start.

Tonights game has been Canceled

The Lady Jays basketball game for tonight has been canceled. I'm told due to icy weather in Kittanning.

Still proud of our Jayhawk

I'm not sure whether Texas is that good or the Ohio defense was that tired last night. Either way the Longhorns won and the Buckeye's didn't, final score 24-21.

Terrelle finished the game completing 5 of 14 attempts for 66yds, and rushed for 78yds on 15 carries. And a 5yd TD catch, which I thought was eerily similar to the one he caught from Jordan in the state title game against Dunmore.

Terrelle completed his freshmen year as a Buckeye with a passer rating of 145.62, completing 100 of 166 attempts for 1,311yds an average of 7.9yds per pass and 12 touchdowns. He also rushed for a total of 631yds on 139 carries, an average of 4.5yds per carry, (2nd highest on team), and 6 touchdowns.

All in all, not a bad first year of college for this Jayhawk! Can't wait till next season!

Lady Jays capture the top spot

The Lady Jays, with a little help from Shady Side who handed East Allegheny their first loss of the season, took over the top spot in AA Section 4 last night with a 74-34 (the score reported to the papers, 73-34 was incorrect), win over Riverview. Shady Side helped the Lady Jays with a 54-31 victory over previously undefeated EA.

Total scoring efforts from the Lady Jays:
  • Kayla 25 pts, 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists
  • Shanae 19 pts, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists
  • Kirstie 10 pts, 4 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 assists
  • Shanice 8 pts, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist
  • Lauren Bosley 6 pts, 1 assist
  • Samantha 2 pts, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist
  • Mary 4 pts, 2 rebounds
The girls will host AAA - Kittaning(8-3) tonight for a 7:30 tip off. Also at tonight's game Kayla Cook will be honored for reaching the 1,000 point mark in her career.

I'll make this as simple as possible for you folks,...If you are not attending the girls games then you are missing a great piece of Jayhawk history as it's being made!

Fiesta Bowl, tonight!

Ohio State vs Texas tonight at 8:00 on FOX!

Hawks topple Center

In all reality, I guess everyone wins in the Coaches vs Cancer Invitational. But to narrow it down to a specific team tonight, Jeannette won.

Jordan returned to the starting line up to help lift the Hawks in a decisive victory over 5-4 Center by a final of 62-33.

Jeannette resumes section play on Tuesday the 6th when they travel to Steel Valley (1-5) for a 7:30 tip off.

Buffalo loses 1st bowl appearance

Connecticut's Donald Brown ran for 261 yards, 208 in the first half, to earn player of the game, and lead his Huskies over Buffalo by a final of 38-20.

During the post game interviews, Brown who is a junior, announced that he will pursue the NFL next season instead of returning to UCONN to finish out his senior year.

An outstanding performance from Davonte and the Bulls defense created 5 turnovers which set the stage for all of Buffalo's points. UB quarterback Drew Willy stated in a post game interview, "I wish we could have done more on offense, they're a good defense, I'll give it to them. But we left some plays on the field."

Congratulations are still in order however, for Davonte and all his teammates on an outstanding season (their first winning season since 1996) and their debut bowl appearance. The Bulls head coach Turner Gill said, "This isn't going to be a one-year wonder. I do believe we're going to be vying for championships year after year."

International Bowl, today!

New Year brings New Honors

Here's a couple of great articles to start your new year off right:
  1. First up, Moziah was named male athlete of the week at the Trib, that article can be found here.
  2. And over at the Post Gazette, they did a real nice article on our Lady Jays. That article can be seen right here.
  3. And while your at the PG's site you can take a look at who they elected as their female athlete of the week. You guessed it, Kayla Cook.

Both of these Jayhawks have shown great improvements in their games this season, and are very deserving of these acknowledgments. Congratulations to the both of you!

Happy New Year
