Hawks vs Southmoreland photos

I want to try something new with the photos, I've got them posted over at flickr.com and if I did everything correctly, you should be able to view them right here.

If you cannot see them, please let me know. And if you can see them let me know if you like this way or not, flicker is new for me so this is all a big test.

Thanks

"3 Run Homer", no, thats not a nickname!

Let's see ...6...3...? I need a number to go with 6 & 3 so I can play the lottery.

Our Lady Jays dropped a very much needed one, that would have kept their play off hopes alive, by a final score of 6-3. And wouldn't you know it, across town at the Hawks game, they dropped a sectional one also by a score of 6-3. So you see, I need a third number to play the lottery, to keep my hopes alive!

Brian was on the hill today and was only able to record 4 strike outs and gave up 12 hits, which all in all isn't too bad. The Hawks were able to get 13 hits,
"a 3 run homer"
but the one that hurt them was a 3 run homer in the top of the 5th that sealed the deal for Southmoreland giving them a 4-2 lead.

The Hawks were never able to regain that lead, they did get one of the runs back in the bottom of the 6th, off an RBI basehit from Jordan. But that would be all they could do the rest of the game.

Southmoreland added 2 more runs in the top of the 7th, as a gesture of reassuring their lead, and the Hawks couldn't get anything going their last at bat. It wasn't a total loss though,
"two darn near identical double plays"
we did get to witness two fantastic and darn near identical double plays from the Hawks, both shots went right to Brett who flipped it into Jordan's glove who finished them off with a rocket over to Chris at first. Very well executed guys!

Tomorrow the Hawks will travel to South Allegheny for a 3:30 start, if you plan to go (which you should), take note to the earlier start time! Our Lady Hawks will travel to West Shamokin for a 4:00 start.

PS: If anyone gives me a third number to go with our 6 & 3, for a chance at the lottery and it hits, we'll donate the money to the teams!!

9 Strikeouts & 2 Hits, Enough to Land the Lady Hawks

It was tough defensive plays like the one above from Sam, and great heads up playing from Kirstie who robbed this runner of a score, that kept the girls in this hard fought battle to the end. Unfortunately when the opposing pitcher throws 9 strike outs and only gives up 2 hits, it takes the big prize, and makes it even tougher to reach.

The Lady Hawks, with the help of the strong pitching arm of Nicole, hung in there until the bottom of the 6th inning, when Mt. Pleasant was finally able to score the only run they needed to win this one.

But the top of the 7th inning brought a chance for the Lady Hawks to tie it up. Kirstie Cortazzo got it started off with a stand up double, Lauren Maline grounded out but not before advancing Kirstie over to 3rd. Nicole pops out, and Corinn grounds out leaving Kirstie stranded on 3rd, to end the inning and give Mt. Pleasant the 1-0 final score.

The only 2 hits were Nicole's double in the top of the 5th and Kirstie's double in the top of the 7th. Tomorrow the girls will get a chance to redeem themselves when they rematch Mt. Pleasant at home for a 4:00 start.

Hawks lose some ground!

Hawks drop a tough fought one to Shady Side Academy by a final of 4-3 and drop another notch in the section to 3-5-0. Tomorrow they'll host another sectional match up with Southmoreland at Clarkson Field for a 3:45 start.

Game changes!!

Todays baseball game against Shady Side Academy has been rescheduled for tomorrow for the same time and place, and the South Allegheny game was moved to Thursday the 1st.

Games cancelled, but the day isn't wasted.

Both games, baseball and softball, have been cancelled for today due to the rainy weather we are having. So instead of wasting the day, I've decided to provide you with an indoor lesson on golf. Well not me, but Jeannette's very own Fred Groth from the graduating class of 1998.

Fred's instructional video on driving the long ball, can be viewed right here! And you can watch him in action here!

Championship Rings

What a wonderful evening!

What a wonderful evening, and a beautiful way to bring this spectacular football season to an end. Tonight the Jayhawks, Coaches, and Cheerleaders received their championship rings in an absolutely classy presentation.

Charlie Batch delivered a very inspirational and touching speech, reminding us all to be proud of our town and the achievements that we have reached together, as a community. And Coach Reitz reflected on how important the input of the fans and the community had on the outcome of this season, and if you stop and think about it, they are both absolutely correct.

I had a wonderful time, and I'd like to thank the parents club for inviting me to this banquet. It opened my eyes once again to the true meaning of small town pride, and I'll cherish this moment forever.

I have posted some photos in the media section, I only hope that they give you the same feeling that I experienced tonight, so you can truly feel what it's like to be a Jeannette Jayhawk!

Nick sets new record, in record time!

Nick is OK, and Dave (Nicks Father), isn't trying to break his leg, (in the photo above), this is actually a stretching exercise which is part of the warm up process to make Nick run even faster!!

And this weekend it paid off, Nick won 4 first place medals in less than 20 hours in 2 different counties. And was able to set a new record for
"shattering his fathers, 28 year old record"
Jeannette High School in the 300 intermediate hurdles, completeing them in 39.14 and shattering his fathers 28 year old record of 39.5. I'm told Nick also earned enough points to tie GCC for the AA Team MVP Trophy.

You can check out the full article on Nick from the WCCA Championships right here. All the results from that meet can be seen here, and all the results from the Mars Invitational can be seen here.

Congratulations Nick!!

Mercy sakes alive, it's a shutout!

Ain't nothing like a roadtrip on a beautiful Friday afternoon to watch Nick Alteri pitch a shutout, and mercy rule the home team.

Nothing like it at all folks!

Nick recorded 4 strikeouts, and gave up only 5 hits in a 13-0 romp of Leechburg, it was the strong pitching performance of Nick, and a delicate balance of the bats and the defense that gave the Hawks this deserved victory.

Hawks got on the board first, when Leechburgs pitcher walked around a run for them, eventually he was able to battle himself out of that inning leaving 3 Hawks stranded.

2nd inning for the Hawks started out what appeared to be the same way with Ryan Ault taking a pitch to the middle of his back. But Tom Paulone had other plans, laying down a beautiful sacrifice bunt moving Ryan over to 2nd.
"Kenny jacks one into deep center, for a stand up double"
Kenny stands in and jacks one deep to center for a stand up double scoring Ryan. And Jordan, not to be outdone, sends out his own stand up double scoring Kenny to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Bottom of the 2nd was an easy 3 up - 3 down for the Hawks and the top of the 3rd brought 2 additional runs for the Hawks off the RBI bats of Ryan and Kenny. Bottom of the 3rd was just as easy for the Hawks defensively, except this time they threw in a beautiful, well executed double play from Brett over to Chris to end the inning.

And right back into the bats for the top of the 4th, Brett leads off with a double but was able to turn it into a triple, thanks to an error. Nick then grounds out to first but not before driving home Brett, to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead.

Bottom of the 4th brought much of nothing for Leechburg. But the top of the 5th was all Jayhawk bats.
"T got it started with a solid rip up the middle"

T got it started, after Ryan grounded out to 3rd, with a solid rip up the middle. Kenny smacks a shot into center for a basehit, Jordan doubles again and collects 2 more RBI's....It ain't over folks, stay with me..., Brett gets a basehit and Nick mirrors that hit with his own, driving home Jordan. Chris stands in there and decides to keep it going with a hit of his own bringing home Brett, still 2 on folks. And if that wasn't enough, Brian cranks out another double picking up 2 RBI's of his own and giving the Hawks a commanding 12-0 lead. But wait..there's more!! Brian scores from third on a wild pitch to finalize this tremendous inning, and give the Hawks a 13-0 lead!

One small threat from Leechburg in the bottom of the 5th, but nothing else, Kenny tracked down a long ball to center to end the inning and confirm the mercy rule.

I went into detail on this one, cause I felt sorry for 2 Jayhawk dad's that got to the game right after Kenny tracked that last catch down in center. They missed this entire awesome game due to Pittsburgh traffic! I hope I didn't miss anything for you guys!!

The Hawks will rest up this weekend and travel to Shady Side Academy on Monday for a 4:00 start.

Lady Hawks lose, a shot for 3rd place.

The bottom fell out for the Lady Hawks as they dropped a much needed one against Ford City today by a final of 15-5. A win today would have secured a tie for 3rd place in the conference.

Monday the girls will host Mt. Pleasant (8-3) for a 4:15 start.

Big Bats = Big Wins

2Home runs in the bottom of the 2nd, a solo shot to right by Nick and a 2 run homer by Brian over the 349' sign in center, helped catapult the Hawks over visiting Elderton Bobcats.

The bats were swinging hard today (and connecting) for the Hawks, they were able to put 4 runs on the board in that inning, another run in the bottom of the 3rd, and 4 more runs in the bottom of the 4th to take a commanding lead 9-2 at that point. I left to try and catch some of the girls game across town, and by the time I got to that game, the Hawks were able to put 3 more runs up to finish off the Bobcats with a final score of 12-2.

Brian recorded 5 strike outs, in the 5 innings that I caught, and the fielding was just fantastic. Tom Paulone tracked one down in right field for an awesome snag, Kenny ran a mile out in center field to make an outstanding catch and rob an Elderton batter of an easy double and 2 RBI's.

Once again a complete performance from the Hawks!

Tomorrow they travel to Leechburg (3-4, 3-6), for a 3:45 start. Leechburg is coming off a 15-0 win against Wilkinsburg, and I'm sure they will be looking to capitalize on this.

Games Today

Another day filled with baseball and softball action. First up the boys host Elderton at 3:45 over at Clarkson field and the girls will host Ford City for a 4:15 start up at Altman. It's gonna be a real nice day so pick a game or better yet, go to both, and enjoy the day!

Lady Hawks Dethrone the Queens of GCC

You got to want it, to win it, and we want it more!

video

And the Lady Hawks did just that!, Dethroning the Lady Centurions today at Altman field by a final score of 6-4, and handing them, their 2nd sectional loss of the season.

For those of you who don't know, this was hugh folks! I'm told that this is the first win against GCC, at softball, in around 10 years or so. I can't explain the feeling of beating our favorite rival, GCC. It was like when we beat them in the WPIAL football championship game at Heinz field last season, it felt that good!!

Off the strong pitching performance of, K-Fey, who recorded 8 strike outs and allowed only 4 runs, the Lady Hawks were able to put the Lady Centurions in their place.
The girls put their first run on the board in the bottom of the 1st off the bat of Lauren Maline and the 2nd score of the game came in the 3rd inning when Kirstie Cortazzo crossed the plate off some wild throws by GCC.

It wasn't until the top of the 5th, that GCC was able to earn their first run of the game. But the Lady Hawks decided to extend their lead even more in the bottom of the 5th, sending 4 more runners across the plate and insuring their performance today. Lauren Maline once again pulls out a clutch double forcing Chelsea and Katherine, across the plate, and Nicole drives another double to center to bring home Lauren, and out of no where, Corinn smacks a single scoring Nicole and making the score 6-1.

GCC added another run in the top of the 6th, and rallied pretty hard in the top of the 7th, starting off with a triple, then dropping one over the head of Kirstie at short and a hit to left. But K-Fey wasn't about to let this one slip away, the next 2 batters grounded out and then after hanging in as long as she could, the final batter went down swinging.

Enjoy the moment Ladys, this is the end result of great pitching, awesome defense, smart heads up playing, and of course some fantastic hitting. You worked very hard for this, and you most certainly deserve it!!

The girls will host Ford City tomorrow for a 4:15 start, and just a little reminder girls, they beat us twice, but I sense that Ford City will have their hands full tomorrow!! Don't You?!!

Hawks, out perform the Wildcats!

Just to confirm my "missing puzzle piece story", the above airborne Jayhawk is Brett. Glad to see you back Brett! This outstanding play and many others like it helped lift the Hawks over visiting East Allegheny by a final score of 14 - 5.

Kenny pitched the full 7 innings scoring 8 strikeouts, and giving up 1 homerun in the top of the 2nd. The Hawks were able to get that run right back in the bottom of the second off the bat of Mike P. who scored Brian from 3rd (Brian tripled earlier), on a grounder to the second baseman.

EA gained the lead right back though, in the top of the 3rd from a double to deep center. But once again the Hawks tied it right back up in the bottom of that inning. Scoring Tom Paulone from second on a stand up double off the bat of Kenny Grant.

Bottom of the 4th, the bats came alive for the Hawks, scoring 6 more runs from hits by Mike Mash (double), Tom Paulone, Jordan Ault, Kenny Grant, Brett Elliot (double), & Nick Alteri (double), giving the Hawks a 8-2 commanding lead

EA was able to add a run in the 5th and two more in the 6th to bring the score a little closer 8-5. But the Hawks would have none of that. Bottom of the 6th, the Hawks rallied the bats again, for 6 more runs, and a new pitcher for EA. However it was too late, the Hawks took the roar out of the Wildcats with a final score of 14-5.

Unless there's a make-up game that I don't know about (Coach?), the next game for the Hawks will be at home on Thursday the 24th against Elderton.

Just an all around outstanding performance today boys, fantastic!!

First Pitch

A great day for Jeannette Sports

What a perfect day this has been!

Today's festivities ended up with a girls game under the lights, 7th and 8th graders, I believe. And I got a sneek peek at the future pitcher for the Lady Hawks, in Nicole Hall. And I'm sure we'll hear that name a lot, in the years to come.

Opening day is by far a very big day for these youngsters, and I'm told there are about 160 kids playing ball this season, but just watching the joy on their faces, and their eagerness to get on the field, was enough to convince me that this was indeed, their day. And to all the coach's who take time out of their busy days to teach these kids a sport that they'll cherish forever, I tip my hat to you all. Sometimes you just don't realize what you do for these kids, or perhaps receive the recognition you so deserve. So, thank you for all you do!!

There was a flag raising ceremony, which didn't go quite as planned, but was still beautiful and respectful. Followed by Coach Reitz, who tossed out the first pitch of the season.

Also going on today was the JV Softball tournament at Hempfield, where our girls were able to pull in 2 wins out of 3 games. Defeating Greensburg Salem by a score of 6-0 in the early game, dropping the second game to Hempfield, and rebounding nicely against Plum with a score of 8-3. Kirstie, I'm told knocked one out of the park in that game. Way to go Kirstie, I'm sorry I missed it!!

MVP's from todays tournament go to Kirstie - Game 1, Katherine - Game 2, and Kirstie once again in game 3. Congratulations to both of you!!

I've posted some photos, of todays events in the media section and some here on the site. I have more, lots more, and I'll get them posted very soon.

Today was without a doubt, "A great day for Jeannette sports"!

More Opening Day fun!!

The Jeannette Baseball Association implemented a new rule this year. In the event that a team is short a player, a fan can be pulled from the stands and put on the team. The only stipulation to this rule is, the fan must be 7 times the age of the oldest child playing. Not a bad deal for this lucky fan:

Boys 11-12 years of age will start playing baseball at noon

A very festive day, loaded with fun, food and of course Baseball!!!

Admirably, Incomplete!

Have you ever put together a puzzle only to realize that your missing a piece? And then that feeling sets over you like you just worked very hard, only to find out you really could have used that missing piece to get the full scope of what the puzzle should look like? Yeah me too! And it's frustrating!

Todays missing piece of our puzzle was Brett. Brett played a little in the first inning, as a DH and Chris filled in defensively, at shortstop for Brett today. And you did real good Chris, don't get me wrong, but I believe your even better over on first! Maybe it's just me, I don't know. So the moral of the story is, an incomplete team just don't give you the full scope of things, just like the puzzle.

And today the Hawks witnessed just that, losing to non-sectional, Ford City 10-1.

The Hawks left 2 runners stranded in the first, one in the 4, 5, and 6th inning, and 2 more in the seventh. Incomplete base running, (see where I am going with this?) Now this all didn't come at the hands of the Hawks, oh no! Ford City's pitcher was right on the money today also, and the second pitcher they brought in, in the top of the 5th, was just as accurate! And the bats of Ford City reassured the accuracy of these pitchers.

Today, Ford City was the complete team, and they showed it offensively and defensively. and like the girls letting one slip away yesterday, there is nothing you can do about it Hawks, except shake it off and prepare for East Allegheny on Monday.

As always though, it was very admirable of Coach Clarkson to get the young guns in there!!

Congrats to Chana

Congratulations to Chana Rager. Chana was awarded The Jeannette Rotary Clubs, Student of the Month award, for April. For those of you who don't know Chana, she was the Jayhawk's Mascot and also played on the girls basketball team.

Softball Tournament

The girls softball team will participate in a tournament on Saturday at Hempfield high school. I believe that the events will kick off at 8:15 in the morning.

If anyone knows otherwise, please leave me know.

One bad call, destroys it all!

What started out to be a very solid played game by the Lady Hawks, quickly turned into an out of control, fiasco. At the expense of one bad call. What clearly should have been a 3rd out, turned out to be a very productive inning, for GCC.

I arrived early, but the game was already underway (go figure). Going into the bottom of the 1st, I was told I missed 2 runs for the Lady Hawks and a double by Chelsea and a triple from Kirstie. Just my luck! But it was nice to here that the girls jumped out to an early lead.
"sounds like they came to play"
The starting pitcher, K-Fey struck out 3 of the first 6 batters she faced and the defense took care of the others. Watching the first couple innings of the Lady's was like watching a well oiled machine, churn out great plays, one after the other. I texted my "contact" with our performance at the softball game, he was at the boys baseball game, and he texted back with this statement "Sounds like they came to play". And he hit the nail right on the head.

And it was like that for the first 5 1/2 innings. Bottom of the 5th brought the controversial call at second, and the destruction of the well oiled machine. The call clearly should have been a force out at second from a bunt layed down by the batter. The ump started to call "out" (fist and arm raised also), but then for some reason decided against it, calling the runner safe. That was the boost that the Lady Centurions were looking for, they were down 5-2 at that point, but with the sudden help of "a friend", they were able to add 5 runs to take the lead 7-5.

Coach Butler didn't waste no time sending Nicole to the bullpenn to start warming up. And she entered the game in the bottom of the 6th. But it didn't matter, cause GCC was still enjoying the free gift, and was able to tack on 4 more runs. Taking a commanding lead of 11-5.

The girls were able to add another run in the top of the 7th, but that was all they could get. Losing a heart breaker to GCC, 11-6

Here are some of the great plays that I caught :
  • A lot of great hits, doubles, triples, clutch hits when they mattered the most
  • A diving spectacular catch by our catcher (yeah, our catcher), Samantha. That was awesome, Sammy!!
  • Corinn raced down a pop fly out in center for an unbelievable catch.
  • A beautiful diving stop at short by Kirstie
  • A very well executed run down play, great heads up!
It's always tough to lose girls, always, but to have it taken off your plates like today, is a down right crime! Nothing you can do about it, except prepare even harder for the next game. On April 23 & May 6th we'll get another crack at GCC, just keep working hard at it, and eventually it will pay off!

Girls lose to Leechburg

Our girls lost one to Leechburg today with a score of 6-3. Tomorrow they will travel to GCC for a 3:45 start.

Hawks get a "W", ...from me anyway!

Iwas impressed today. GCC was very good, they fielded well, they backed each other up very well, they batted well, and lets face it, they are coached extremely well.

That however isn't what impressed me. What impressed me was the way the Hawks never gave up! They were fielding well, backing each other up well, batting very well and lets face it, they are coached extremely well also, but on top of all that,
"and even down 12-1, they still didn't throw in the towel"
and even down 12-1 going into the bottom of the 5th, they still didn't throw in the towel!

No, instead they rallied in the bottom of the 5th scoring 6 runs to begin the healing process, and stop the bleeding. Mike Mash got it started off with a rip to right field, Brandon pinch runs for him, Tom P. grounds out but not before advancing Brandon to 2nd. Jordan drops one over second base for a base hit putting runners on the corners and Kenny doubles into deep center scoring a run, 12-2. Mike P. singles loading up the bags and Brett hits a infield base hit, scoring a run and keeping the bases loaded, 12-3. With the bags loaded up, Nick cranks out a deep, deep triple to unload the bases, scoring 3 more runs 12-6. Chris pops out and Brian singles driving home Nick to make the score 12-7

The score remained 12-7 until the top of the 7th when GCC added yet another run going up 13-7, but then, once again in the bottom of the 7th,
"caught in a run down, between 3rd and home"
the Hawks started to rally again, only this time, all they could produce was one more run from Brett, who was caught in a run down between 3rd and home and was able to score only after the catcher dropped the ball after making the tag on Brett, making the final score 13-8.

So my hat goes off to Mike Mash for not giving up and pitching an excellent game and to the rest of the team for playing some pretty solid ball as well, and hanging in there. I might as well tip my hat to GCC also, after all, they also played a very solid, entertaining game.

Next on the agenda for the Hawks: This Friday they travel to Ford City for a 3:45 start time.

Games tonight

Don't forget, tonight at 4:15 the baseball team will host the centurions of GCC. And the softball team will also host Leechburg for a 4:15 start.

Get out and enjoy the weather and support your teams!

Softball team gets a much needed win!

Girls collect a much needed win up in West Shamokin, with a score of 3 - 0. I did not attend the game, but I hear there was a spectacular catch involving a mud puddle and Kirstie. You put the picture together!

That would be determination, folks!! Way to go girls! The Lady Hawks will host Leechburg tomorrow for a 4:15 start.

Today the Hawks lost to Riverview by a score of 6 - 3. This drops the Hawks to 1-3 in the conference, and 3-5 overall. And despite the way this record looks, the Hawks are actually playing good ball. I've seen it for myself. Did you guys know we had 2 grand slams this season so far? Yeah, Kenny and Brian.

But the boys are probably down on themselves a little bit, cause they know they let a few easy ones slip away, and this is where you come into the picture.
"This is where you come into the picture."
This Wednesday, April 16th, the Hawks will host the always exciting rival team of GCC, for a 4:15 start. What you can do is get your "butt"(and a friends butt) down to Clarkson field and show the Hawks some of that famous Jayhawk love! GCC is currently 3-0 in the conference, (maybe 4-0, pending the outcome of their game against East Allegheny today). I think maybe it's time to knock GCC back down a rung on the ladder, and we'll need your help on Wednesday to achieve it. I've witnessed the response of the team earlier this season, when the fans got behind them, and Tom Paulone even mentioned it at the City of Champions celebration, it does work folks, it truly does work!!

Not to take away from the softball team though, they also host a game on Wednesday against Leechburg. But on Thursday the 17th, the girls will play, who else, but GCC. So after we help the boys on Wednesday, we'll all go up to Greensburg on Thursday and help out the girls!
"The girls will play GCC on Thursday"

The weather is supposed to be nice, real nice. All week! So get out of the house, enjoy the weather, and catch a great game of ball this week. And I don't want to hear no excuses as to why you didn't make it to either game. I've heard them all, and even used 1 or 2 myself.

Both teams are exciting to watch, and both promise to be a very good game. And shame on you if you miss either one!

To "error" is human, to forgive divine!

Unfortunately Southmoreland wasn't too divine!

A four error, 3 run inning in the bottom of the 6th, let the Scotties walk away with one today with a final score of 6 - 3. Now I could sit here and chew your butts out, but I don't really see what good that would do. Besides, I'm pretty sure your gonna hear it from the Coach anyway! You guys know where it went wrong and I trust you'll work to correct that little problem!

Right out of the gates, the Hawks threatened. Loading 2 runners on in the top of the first, only to leave them both stranded on a deep fly ball to right, off the bat of Chris. The Hawks were feeling it, they just had to fine tune it.

Scotties scored their first run in the bottom of the 1st, went 3-up and 3-down in the 2nd, and added another run in the bottom of the 3rd to go up 2-0.

Top of the 4th, and after fine tuning it, Chris doubles to center scoring Kenny, who got on and stole his way around the bags, making the score 2-1. Not to be outdone, Brian triples to left center scoring Chris to tie the game up. A strong defensive stand in the bottom of the 4th kept the Scotties from taking the lead back.

Top of the 5th, Nick gets an infield hit, and advances to 2nd on a ground ball from Mike P. Brett steps to the plate and jacks one deep for a double, scoring Nick to take the lead 3-2. Kenny flys out to end the inning.

The Scotties rally in the bottom of the 5th, scoring a run to tie it back up 3-3 and force a pitching change by the Hawks. Nick comes into pitch and gets a grounder hit back to him to pull the plug on this rally.

Top of the 6th started off with another double to left field by Chris, unfortunately he was left stranded on that same bag.

Bottom of the 6th? I don't really want to talk about the bottom of the 6th, it's only gonna make me cry! 4 errors and 3 unanswered runs, should pretty much explain my pain!

Top of the 7th brought a small threat and a large scare, Mike P. drops one in center after 2 down, which started the beginnings of a rally, no doubt. I was feeling it! Brett then cracks a hard grounder to short and collides with the first baseman, landing rather hard to the ground. No damage done though, he returned to the hand shake line, like a great ball player will.

Hawks lose, final 6-3. Tomorrow they'll travel to Monesson (this was a home game, but has changed to an away game to accommodate a banquet request for Monesson) for a 4:00 start.

Work on them "E"s, Hawks! I'm divine, Monesson won't be!!

Double Time = Double Photos

Todays track meet photo's can be seen right here.
And today's softball game photo's right here.

Double Time! Double Time!!

Let's talk about speed! Today I tryed to cover 2 different sports, and not being a reporter and only just a fan, made it a new learning experience for me. It is a lot harder than it would seem. Being a reporter would have given me an edge I suppose, and being a fan made me not want to miss any of the action. Kind of torn between the two, you know?

Well, if I would have the speed of Nick Spino, I probably would have been just fine, unfortunately I don't! And all the action the girls provided at the softball game, didn't help matters at all, for me.

I was able to watch Nick run the hurdles and the 100 meter dash in 11.3 secs., I might add. (Nicks time, not mine!) If I would have ran it, the time would have been more like 11.3 hours! I can clearly see why so many colleges are after Nick to run track for them. As fast as he was, Nick still, was able to make it look graceful and easy to do. Nice job Nick, and good luck the rest of the season!

The second part of my new experience was running a pinch late for the girls softball game. I played catch up the entire game. I must have ask Coach Cortazzo about 7 times what the score was and what inning we were in! But the action I did see was unmistakable!

The girls were in great form, Nicole's pitching was fantastic, the defense was sharp, and the most important part, the bats, were swinging non stop! Everyone got on base, some even twice in the same inning. The final score I recorded, and I hope I'm right, was 18 - 5 in favor of the Lady Hawks. And if I'm wrong, it's because I tryed to double time my day. Like I said earlier, if I had the speed of Nick Spino, I may have not missed any of it!

Nick and the rest of the track team will host Trinity Christian on Thursday at 3:45pm and the girls softball team will travel to Ford City also on Thursday for a 3:45pm start.

Still time left

The public can purchase them by methods on the original posting, and also at Nancy's Grille in town from the hours of 8:oo am till 4:oo pm. Monday thru Saturday until April 17th.

Strong first inning, propels Ford City

The power pitching of Nicole Linsenbigler, was swift and precise. Unfortunately so were the first inning bats of Ford City, racking up 4 runs in the inning to jump out of the gates 4 - 0.

Ford City fooled everyone, including me, by leading off with a bunt. That runner stole 2nd and eventually crossed the plate to score the first run for Ford City.

But not to be outdone, Samantha walks in the bottom of the first with 1 out, and Kirstie Cortazzo drives one deep into left field for a triple, scoring the the first RBI for the Lady Hawks. Corinn then gets an infield hit scoring Kirstie to allow another run before the inning shut down.

Top of the 4th, Ford City added 4 more runs before Coach Butler looks to the bullpen for Katherine Fey. K-Fey gave up 1 hit before striking out the next batter to end the inning. The girls were able to add another run in the bottom of the 4th making it 8 - 3.

And although Ford City threatened a couple more times, the strong pitching performance of Katherine combined with some impressive defense, held the Lady Sabers at bay. Bottom of the 7th brought no change, Lady Hawks weren't able to muster up anymore runs, falling to Ford City with a final score of 8 - 3.

The girls will host Apollo Ridge tomorrow at 4:15pm and travel to Ford City on Thursday for a rematch.

Big bats, not enough for a win.

Hawks drop a hard faught one in extra innings, 6 - 5 to Shady Side. Brian Weightman records a grandslam, but it just wasn't enough to secure the win.

Hawks travel to Southmoreland on Wednesday for a 4:00 start.

Nick's article in Sunday's Paper

Here is the article on Nick from Sunday's newspaper
Click on Image to View Larger

It isn't all about football, here!

Didn't I tell you we'll have to keep an eye on Nick?

Nick competed in the Tri-State Track Coaches Association Outdoor Championship at West Mifflin High School against the Class AAA runners and placed 1st in the high hurdles with a time of 15.04 and 1st in the intermediate hurdles with a time of 40.44.

The news article can be read here, and I'm told there is another article that was in Sunday's paper, but unfortunately it isn't available online.

Way to go Nick!

And you guys thought we we're only about football!

Thanks, from the Parents Club!

The parents club wish to thank you for your participation in the apparel sales.
And I quote "Both Football and Basketball appreciated the support from our fans throughout the Jayhawk Country and I do mean country"
Sales were fantastic, and the support is highly appreciated! The orders will be put in tomorrow with the manufacturer and once they are done and ready for pick up or delivery, I'll post something here on the site.

Car Wash

The weather is breaking and spring is in the air, and if your car is anything like mine, it probably needs the grime and salt from the winter, washed off!
Why not let someone else do it for you?
The Softball team will hold a 2 day car wash at Advance Auto Parts Rt.30, on 4/12 and 4/13
Stop up and help out a good cause and drive away in a clean car!!

Current Standings

Both our ball teams are currently in a 3 way tie in their conference, the baseball team is for 1st place, and the softball team is for 3rd place, and since the season has really only just begun, anything can happen.

Baseball:

Softball:

On Monday the 7th, both teams will play host to their opponents, first up Coach Clarkson and his squad will host Shady Side Academy for a 4:15 start. Shady Side started their season down at Disney World coming away with 2 wins out of 3 games, their most recent game though was a tough loss to GCC, 2-1. Other action in the conference has GCC hosting South Allegheny and Riverview traveling to Deer Lakes for a non conference match up.

In Softball, Coach Butler and our girls will play host to Ford City for a 4:15 start. Ford City is coming into Mondays game from an, 11-1 victory on Thursday over Apollo Ridge. So it could be tough to knock them back down a notch, but not impossible!!

The weather is supposed to be nice, so get out to a park of your choice, and support your spring sports teams, who doesn't like a day at the park? and I guarantee, you'll enoy the show!!

TP's at it again!

And he also has decided to run the 200-meter dash in track, at Jeannette

Stand out stats

Here's some stand out stats on our very own Kenny Grant. These are from the past week of games. For those of you who don't know Kenny, he's extremely humble and these numbers are just that to him, only numbers!
Pitching:
  • 1 win with a .000 era
  • 10 K's. in 8 2/3 innings

Hitting:

  • .545 avg.
  • 10 rbi's
  • 1 double

Stickin with the heat!

If throwing heat, the entire 7 innings, is what it takes to win. Then my starting pitcher today would have been Katherine Fey also.

"K-Fey" as her teammates call her, was highly impressive. I recorded 7 strikeouts, but my method is prehistoric, so I apologize if I missed any Katherine.

The combination of K-Feys pitching and some pretty solid defense, gave the girls a 3-1 win over West Shamokin today. And like the boys first game, this one was just as cold, temperature wise.

The 1st inning belonged to Chelsea, fielding two pop flys after a small threat from W.S. to bring the inning to a close. The Ladys had some trouble connecting with the ball in the bottom of the first, it wasn't until the bottom of the second inning that the girls scored their first run of the game.

Top of the 3rd brought 2 more of K-Fey's strikeouts in a easy inning for the girls, but top of the 4th brought W.S. their first run of the game, tying the score, 1 all.

It wasn't until the bottom of the 5th, that the fans were up out of their seats. Kirstie Cortazzo (A one to watch, remember that?) got every little piece of one and sailed it into deep left center, unfortunately she was tagged out at home, trying to turn a solid triple into a possible home run.

Bottom of the 6th, Nicole got on with the help of an error. Coach Butler sends a pinch runner in, "The Boz" Lauren Bosley. Lauren Maline lays down a perfect bunt moving "the Boz" to second and allowing herself to get on first. After another controversial call, and the dust had cleared, the Jayhawks still had 2 girls on base. Kelsie Severini comes to the plate and cracks one for a double, by way of an error, allowing 2 more runs to cross pay dirt. 3-1 Hawks lead!

Top of the 7th had me biting my nails!, K-Fey strikes out the first 2 batters, and I'm thinking this ones in the bag, shame on me! Next 2 batters walk, and the next one acquires an infield hit loading up the bases. Coach Butler looks to the bullpen, but it wasn't necessary at all, cause K-Fey strikes out the last batter to end any chances of letting this game go the other way!

And that is why you stick with the "heat" for 7 solid innings! Final Score 3 -1, Lady Hawks win.

So if that doesn't bring you to the edge of your seat, maybe this will. The girls face GCC at home tomorrow, at 4:15. GCC lost a tough one to Mt. Pleasant today 4-1, and will be looking to redeem themselves.

A couple quick items!

I got a lot to get out to you, so I'll make this quick:
  1. The City of Champions celebration was wonderful, I'll post some photo's and video soon.
  2. The band will travel to Disney World, congrats guys, you deserve it!!
  3. The pitched shutout by Kenny against EA, was the first one since 2002 against Duquense. Congrats Kenny!!
  4. We'll have to keep an eye on Nick Spino, he has the possibilities of setting some records this year in track. More on that to come, I hope!
  5. Boys Baseball won big today, mercy ruling St. Joes for a final score 12 - 2. I'm told the damage was done in the first 2 innings, where the Hawks scored 9 of the 12 runs. Way to go guys!!

Softball Teaser

Here's a little teaser of todays Softball game
I'm heading up to the City of Champions celebration

More to come later!

Busy Day Today!!!

We got a real busy day today here in Jeannette:
  1. Softball game at Altman Field against West Shamokin @4:15 pm
  2. Baseball game at Clarkson Field against St. Joes @4:15 pm also
  3. And the City of Champions Celebration slated for 7:00 pm at City Hall

If you can't find anything to do today, come on in to town. We got plenty for ya!!

Still Cheering!

I seen our cheerleaders hanging out at Sheetz the other day, here...see what I mean!

Girls lose in extra innings

Girls lose a close one in extra innings at Mt. Pleasant by a score of 5-4.

I was texting back and forth with my daughter to keep up with the score. When I text her asking what the final was her reply was this..."5-4 them, we lost cause of a bullshit call".

For my daughter to text me a swear word, I am only left to believe that it was in fact, "a bullshit call"

Tomorrow at 4:15, The girls will play host to West Shamokin.

Here is a clarification on the Softball Game today
The score was 4-4 in the bottom of the 8th. Mt. Pleasant runner reaches 3rd base and is AWARDED HOME, due to an interference call against Corinn who was playing 3rd for us to give Mt. Pleasant the winning run and the game!

There is such a rule on the books. But to use it to award a win, tells me the ref wanted to go home and eat dinner!!

Section opener shutout

With a consistent wind up and release like Kenny's, it becomes real hard to loose!

KG pitched a full 7 innings, in the Hawks sectional shutout win over East Allegheny today with a 6-0 final score.

Things were pretty quiet until the top of the 3rd inning. Nick scored the first run off a stand up double from the bat of Brett Elliot. Kenny walked and Brian flied out to end the inning.

Top of the 4th was a 3 up - 3 downer inning for the Hawks. Chris grounded back to the pitcher, Brandon struck out and Ryan was caught looking.

Kenny's pitching and the Hawks defense kept it 1-0 going into the 5th, when the bottom dropped out for EA. Jordan got a base on balls, Nick flies out to deep center. 1 down. Jordan steals 2nd, Mike walks to put 2 runners on and Brett walks to load em up! Now obviously EA's coach must have read my "Grant-Slam" article, cause he seen Kenny coming to the plate and figured it best to try a fresh arm against him. Didn't matter though, this pitcher walked Kenny with the bases loaded to give the Hawks another run, 2-0. And as generous as that might seem, they weren't done. Brian walks, scoring yet another free run making it 3-0, bases still loaded. Chris rips a base hit scoring another run, 4-0 but forced Brian out at 2nd base. And Lorenzo grounded out to end the free ride.

Bottom of the fifth was a result of just playing great ball, Nick started it off with a diving catch in right field, to literally rob EA of any comeback chances. Kenny tossed a strike out and a ground out to end the inning.

Top of the 6th brought much of nothing for the Hawks, 2 quick outs and Nick was picked off trying to steal second. Bottom of the 6th was as easy as the bottom of the 5th for the Hawks, line drive back to Kenny and 2 solid impressive strike outs.

Top of the 7th, just to insure their lead, the Hawks got it rolling with a solid rip to left field off the bat of Mike P. Coach Clarkson made a great choice by pinch running Tom P. for Mike, after 2 fly outs deep to center from Kenny and Brett, Tommy steals 2nd. Brian reached the bag on an infielder error while Tom crosses the plate to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead. Chris steps to the plate and cracks out a double into left field scoring Brian to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead. Brandon flies out to end the inning, but it didn't matter, the Hawks already purchased the insurance needed to secure the 6-0 shutout.

Tomorrow at 4:15, St. Joes will venture into Clarkson field to meet our Hawks.
