Lady Jays vs GCC & Senior Night Photos

Big game, Big Losses!

The 50/50 was $103.00, this would be the highest acheived at a girls basketball game, to date. I know this don't compare to a football games 50/50, but for a girls basketball game it's very good. The fans were rolling in from all entrances, Jayhawk football players were even there to support the Lady Jays, the cheerleaders came out in full force also. And the "Bird Cage" was packed. Folks, even the nerds, yes the nerds, came out to tonights game.

After all, it was Senior night for 3 Lady Jays. Unfortunately the Lady Centurians of GCC, also came to the game. The final score of 58 - 44 doesn't give justice to the effort put forth by the Lady Jays. They played very well, but was just unable to sink enough baskets.

Leading scorer Kirstie landed 13 points tonight, Kayla struggled with only 10 points, but I'm sure she missed about 20 close ones. Samantha B. and Shanae each got 6 a piece, Chana hit 4, Lauren had 3 & Samantha L. added 2. The score was close through out the first half, each team traded the lead several times until the half way mark, where GCC took a 36 - 28 lead into the locker room. Upon the return trip to the court, the Lady Centurians never gave up the lead from that point on.

It was a hard faught battle, and the Lady Jays performed very well, however, they came up on the short end tonight. But that wasn't the only loss tonight. Tonight the Lady Jays bidded farewell in an absolute beautiful ceremony, to 3 seniors, Samantha Brewer, Nicole Linsenbigler and Chana Rager.

On a more honorable note, Mrs. Sharon Marks (School Superintendent) won the $103.00 - 50/50, and donated the entire amount back into the girls basketball program. Thank you Mrs. Marks, the girls and program both appreciate it.

Up next for the Lady Jays: They will host Freeport tomorrow night at 7:30 PM. This will be 1 of 2 remaining home games for the girls, until they await the seeding to begin the playoffs. So come on up to the high school and cheer them on, cause this isn't over by any means!

I will attend.....................

Listen for a minute.................Do you hear that?

Peace and quiet, gotta love that!

A very quiet night, here on the site and at my home. No I didn't go to dinner with Joe Pa and Terrelle. I had taco's right here, with the better half! And they were pretty darn good.

Tomorrow though, you better be ready. First up, the Lady Jays will play host to GCC on Senior night for the girls. Tip off is set for 7:30 PM. And then on Friday Feb. 1, you can travel to Philadelphia to see the Hawks play in the Prime Time Shootout, or you can travel up to the highschool and catch the Lady Jays take on Freeport at 7:30 PM also. Decisions, decisions!

Me? I'm heading to...................................................(find out on signing day!)

Hawks polish the gym floor on Senior night!

No big secret tonight, the Hawks were still on top of their game! Tonight it seemed like they were just playin' around, sinking some shots, and waiting on the playoffs to start. I often caught the guys laughing and simply having some fun, why not? What the heck, why not mop up the floor with a very bad Apollo Ridge team while your waiting!

Terrelle amassed a whopping 22 points. 1 from the arc and 3 slam dunks, Jordan cashed in with 16 and landed 3 shots from the arc. Even Nick, who's been out of the limelight this season, added 9 points. Shaw added 8, Moziah tossed in for 6, Kenny, Lamar, & Toddy each had 4 a piece, and Cameron and Dane rounded it off with 2 a piece.

The final score of 77 - 33 showed me 2 things, one - the boys are getting restless and are ready to start the playoffs and two - how shiny the gym floor can actually get!

The Senior night festivities, were very nice. Below is some photos from both the game and senior night

Hawks Coverage?, No Problem!!

Who's been with you the most, through out the football season and basketball season? Other than me! ......That's right, SAM FM 107.1 and MSA Sportsnetwork!

And why stop the action now? Tonight's game against Apollo Ridge and recently added, Saturdays game against East Allegheny, will be covered completely by SAM FM 107.1. And the coverage doesn't stop there! Brent and the gang will be following the Hawks every game through the WPIAL playoffs and the PIAA playoffs!

You can gather more info over at SAM FM's website and out of town friends can listen online at MSA Sports Network.

Hawks vs Apollo Ridge Game - Tonight - pregame starts at 7:00 PM

Hawks vs East Allegheny Game - Saturday - pregame starts at 6:30 pm with a special playoff preview show! Don't miss it!!

You want Hawk coverage? You got it!!!

Fire the warning shot!

Attention, Attention!!, All Media Personal, here's a little tidbit about Terrelle that you all , and every nut that is worried about where Terrelle will go, has simply overlooked.

Once Terrelle starts something, he doesn't quit until it's all said and done with. I'm talking basketball! Yesterday TP scratched off LSU and let's be for real, did Oregon ever really have a chance way out west? (That is the big news of the day) They were removed from the list because he is too busy with basketball. TP won't miss a game, that's a promise! The only thing on Terrelle's mind right now is, high school basketball and doing what he can to get his team to the finals! You can call it a "Safe House", if you want, but the court is the only place he is safe from the media! He's still only a kid, just wanting to have fun with his friends. (forgot that too, didn't you?)

The remaining choices left, (of course only Terrelle, knows the real ones), is Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State, and a close friend tells me Pitt isn't quite out of the picture like you all might think. Maybe he's wrong, we'll just have to wait and see, I guess. My hunch? It will be a shocker, come signing day!

But for right now, he just wants to play basketball with his friends, could you let him do that please?

Lady Jays vs EA Photos

Eye on the prize!

Lady Jays, Lady Jays!!! Hold onto that thought, I'll get to that in a moment.

Right now I want to comment on the JV squad. Or better yet kick myself in the butt for not getting there in time to catch that 36 - 34 thriller! The JV's were victorious, but it came down to one second left on the clock when Shanae put up a long ball to sink it for 2 and the win! Shanae and Chelsea both had game high points at 11 a piece.

Now, I promise Shanae, I'll be at the GCC game early, so if you want to do that again, I'm sure that not only me, but all the fans would appreciate it! Could you do it one more time please? Pretty Please?

Ok, on to the main event! And it was just as action packed as the JV game!

What do you do when you can clinch a playoff spot with a win, and use your next couple home games for a better seed?....... Simple, you stand up and play like there is no tomorrow. And that's exactly what the Lady Jays did tonight in a 59 - 56 win. Early in the 1st qtr., the Lady Jays were up by 10 only to let it slip away going into the 2nd qtr., but before the 1st half was up they regained the lead 32 - 26, and took that into the locker room with them.

Lauren Maline started it off right away with a 3-pointer, and I was thinking it would be a replay of the Valley game. But Lauren only sunk 2 from the arc and was still able to get 16 points. Kayla was phenomenal as usual, landing 21 points on the night, and Kirstie had 11 points, 3 of those coming by way of the arc also. Shanae helped the varsity out also, with 6 points, Samantha L. grabbed 3 points and was phenomenal on defense. And Shanice rounded it off adding 2 more.

My standout moment of the night came from Kayla & Kirstie. Kayla, literally threw a touchdown pass to Kirstie who took it to the house for 2. It was darn near the length of the whole court, ask anyone who was there! So my 3 stars of the game go to Shanae for the buzzer win, and Kayla & Kirstie, for the TD!

This Thursday the 31st, the Lady Jays will host GCC who also won tonight at home, against Freeport and are currently on a 4 game win streak. Also this Thursday, we'll celebrate our seniors Samantha B., Chana, & Nicole. Best wishes Lady Jays!!

TP Interview from San Antonio

Below is video of an interview with Terrelle when he was in San Antonio, I never seen it before and thought maybe it would be of interest to you guys as well.

Heavy's coming to town!

Buffalo has signed a four-year home-and-home agreement with Pittsburgh, starting in 2008. Buffalo will begin the series when they travel to Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on September 6, 2008 for the first-ever meeting between the two schools

Set your calendars and get your tickets! We should all try to get together and go support Heavy! Let me know what you think!

Site upgrades and fixes!

Hello All,
I wanted to let you in on some minor corrections on the site here.

First up, Hawk Talk (chat box), some of you have reported that you can't see the right side of the box, (scroll bar area), I redid the html and that problem should be fixed, if you are still having trouble with that, then please check the resolution setting on your monitor. The setting on mine is 1280x1024 and allows me to see everything, please try a higher resolution. If that don't correct the problem, let me know, and we'll work to get it corrected.

Second is the Jayhawk Media Clips section, on the left side (directly under Hawk Talk). I found a more reliable host for those files and transferred them all over last night. This means that they will load and play immediately when you click on them, instead of the buffering crap that they did before.
Here is how you select a clip to listen to or view:
  1. Click the drop down menu at the top of the player where it says "Choose your clip here".
  2. Select a media file to listen to or view and click on that file.
  3. Wait for the play button on the player to turn white, (doesn't take long, couple secs.), and then click it. Your file should start to play right away, with out any major delays. (please keep in mind that this also depends on your Internet connection speed, and how powerful your computer is.)

I also will be moving the audio clips from the individual games there as well. But unfortunately not all of them. So if you are looking for a specific file, let me know and I'll email it to you. I normally have these files still on my hard drive. I am going to start moving them today!

Thanks as always, and yes, your opinion matters more than you think!!

Dave

Another Prestigious Honor for Terrelle

Hawks whip the Quips, again!

Hawks picked apart Aliquippa tonight to win by a score of 62 - 44. Terrelle had 3 one handed jams and 17 points, Shaw sunk 2 - 3 pointers and ended up with 19 points, Jordan added 13 points with 1 - 3 pointer, Kenny had 2 - 3 pointers and 1 from the free throw line for 7 points, Moziah sunk 4 points and Cameron added 2 more. The Hawks looked like a pro team, maybe it was the TV, nah! it was the Hawks!! Below is some photos from the game.

B-Ball Score

Aliquippa - 44

Jeannette - 62

Final

Watch the Hawks on TV today!

7:00 p.m. - Aliquippa High School vs. Jeannette High School

You Can't Keep a Good Man Down!

No there is nothing wrong with Matt here, or the other members of "The Bird Cage". Matt was expressing his feelings at tonight's Hawks-GCC game, about recent statements from the administration of GCC. It would appear that they didn't want Jeannette to support their team, by issuing warnings and consequences if they reacted or misbehaved in certain ways. I won't post what those ways are here, but I believe we all know!

Matt and the rest of the Bird Cage's statement here was censorship! But have you ever heard the saying - "You can't keep a good man down"? Well that's exactly what happened on the court as well.

The Hawks outscored the Centurions, to capture first place in our section with a 69 -43 final score. And Terrelle scored 18 points on the night, only needing 15 to enter the 2,000 point club

What started out to be a close game, 29 - 28 at the half way mark, quickly turned into a massacre in the second half. The Hawks just simply walked away with this one. Shaw sunk 15 points, Moziah had 12, Jordan had 11 points, Cameron added 7, and rounding it up was Kenny with 6. Three point shots were in abundance tonight, for everyone, and Terrelle slammed home 2 dunks. On a more sour note, the first attempt at a dunk, brought the fans to their feet, but not because of the dunk, (TP missed the shot), but because of the tangle with 2 GCC players & Terrelle, Terrelle hurt his lower back area after crashing hard to the court. It didn't stop him from playing, but you could see that his lower back was irritating him through out the rest of the game. However, he was still able to do this:

The JV squad also pulled out a great win to warm up the crowd tonight. Mariell was on fire from the arc, scoring 12 points, Chris sunk 16, Brian added 11 points and was phenomenal under the net also, Toddy scored 10 more, Fatman even got into the action from the arc, sinking 2 and scoring a total 7 points. And Greg landed 5 points. The JV score was tied at the half mark, 29 - 29. They also lit it up in the second half, to take a convincing win back to Jeannette. Final score 65 - 45.

And to put the icing on the cake, like an evening of Jayhawk basketball wasn't enough, the Bird Cage stood and defended their stand on censorship, with a chant that I unfortunately didn't catch all of. I did however catch them pointing to GCC's student section saying "there is the losing team", and then pointing to the Jeannette bench saying "and there is the winning team", after repeating this several times, they just simply got up and walked out, just as calm and cool as can be!!

So my star of the game goes to "The Bird Cage", I just love it when a person stands up for their rights!!

Hawks vs GCC Photos

Lady Jays win big!!

I gotta tell ya, and I'm not bragging, but I'm pretty good at computers, and I can build some beautiful furniture. It's a knack I guess. We all have it, they just differ in what they are. For instance, Lauren Maline has a knack for sinking 3 pointers, she had 4 tonight,.... 4!!! WOW!!! And she made it look as easy as pie!!

Lauren scored the game high points tonight with 20, leading the Lady Jays over the Lady Vikes by a score of 55 - 50. Normally I would have given Lauren my star of the game right here but tonight, I have 2 stars to give out. The first of course, does go to Lauren. The second star goes to the rest of the Lady Jays, for an absolute outstanding performance tonight! Passing was swift and accurate, defense was speaking loudly, and all the girls were chipping in with the points.

It was a hard fought determined win though, many obstacles for the girls to conquer tonight, such as: refereeing was terrible, call after call. The Lady Jays also had to contend with Kaila Benson (#12) of Valley, who at the beginning of this week had 306 points and was averaging 20.4 points per game. And our Kayla, didn't start, she actually didn't get in until the beginning of the second half, but was still able to cash in with 10 points. And if that wasn't enough, our Lady Jays were up by 10 points early in the 2nd qtr., only to let it slip away to a 24 - 24 tie, going into the half. Overcoming deficits was indeed the story of the night, but the Lady Jays managed to conquer them all.

Rounding up the Lady Jays points:
  • Lauren-20
  • Kayla-10
  • Chana-7
  • Kirstie-6
  • Shanae and Nicole each scored 4 points, and Shanice and Chelsea added 2 more a piece. And that's OK, because their defense played an even bigger part!

All around nice job girls!! Well done indeed!! Up next for The Lady Jays, East Allegheny on Monday the 28th at 7:30PM.

Lady Jay - Clairton Photos

Something just wasn't right tonight!

The Lady Jays lost tonight, no scratch that,..... the Lady Jays were an incomplete team this evening. There were many factors involved with tonight's loss. I witnessed bad shots, and bad passing, no hustle, they brought the "D", they just didn't bring the "fence" to go with it! And no Kayla Cook tonight either, Kayla was a little under the weather and unable to attend tonight's match - up. I hope you feel better soon Kayla!

Sorry girls, you know I like you all, but tonight's performance was lacking many features. And I know you got it in you, I've witnessed it before. So shake this non-sectional loss off and prepare for Valley on the 25th.

Now that I got all of that out of the way, the 73 - 45 loss, handed to the Lady Jays by Clairton, really wasn't as bad as it sounds. With Kayla not present, Renee stepped it up and scored 14 points, Lauren M. added 9 points (6 of those by way of 2-3 pointers), Kirstie had a 3 pointer plus 2 more points, and Chana, Samantha L., and Shanae each tossed in for 4 points a piece. Samantha B. had a 3 pointer and Shanice finished it off with 2 points.

Up next for The Lady Jays is another non-sectional match at home, against Valley on the 25th, and then at East Allegheny on the 28th.

On a much better note, The JV squad won tonight by a 50 - 40 score.

Terrelle isn't the only Jayhawk on the recruiting radars!

The Jayhawks had a terrific season, and have produced a lot of talented players. We all know that. And recruiters have been in and out of town here, like it was Grand Central Station. And, not to take anything away from Terrelle, but he isn't the only Jayhawk being heavily recruited right now!!

Some of you may not know that our Jayhawks very own Adam Lock,(pictured on the left), is in big demand as well! But in the same hand, this shouldn't be a big surprise to any of you. I know it wasn't to me!

Adam is still in the process of recruiting so I can't say too much here, but this past weekend, Adam and his family paid a visit to Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Where he is one of their top football recruits, I might add! According to Adams family, the visit went very well, and the university, naturally liked what they seen in Adam.

Out of pure curiosity, I looked up Colgate University, and was very impressed, but the first thing that stood out to me was a clip from the university mission statement. After reading this statement, it became very clear to me why Colgate would pursue an outstanding person/athlete such as Adam. It's not only for his abilities on the gridiron, but also because he fits their university mission statement to a "T". Below is the Colgate University mission statement.

Congratulations Adam, and Good Luck!!

Hawks vs Burrell Photos

Hawks win 62 - 40!

The first 2 points of the game came from a Terrelle dunk, this photo wasn't the first dunk by Terrelle but it was one of many in the romp of the Burrell Bucs, 62 - 40. To be honest, I lost count. Way to exciting to keep count!

Terrelle ended up with 27 points, closer to the 2,000 point club. Jordan had 11 points, 6 of those points by way of the arc. Shaw added 8 more, Kenny sunk 6, and Moziah & Cameron each added 5 a piece.
Also in the house tonight, Steelers QB Charlie Batch, Jay Paterno from Penn State, Matt Cavanaugh from Pitt, yes I said Pitt. The drama never stops here in Jeannette, our little town is indeed, action packed!
Next up for the Hawks a little trip north to Ford City this Thursday for a 7:30 PM tip-off.
And one more thing, if you see Brent Whigham out and about, wish him a happy birthday, tonight was Brent's birthday! Brent is from SAM FM 107.1, and a Jeannette graduate. Happy Birthday Brent!!
Game photo's to follow!

Here's a couple of photos of Terrelle's visit to Michigan

And check out the block party, a guy had planned for TP, or more so, the only item he didn't take into consideration for that party!

Jayhawk B-Ball Trivia

Here is a tid bit of trivia for tonight's basketball game. Compliments of SAM FM 107.1 and Brent Whigham.
Coming into tonight's contest with the Burrell Bucs, the Jeannette Jayhawks have won 30 straight games in the bird cage. Do you remember the last time the Hawks lost at home?? It was January 29, 2004 when the Freeport Yellowjackets won 73-52.
I will put the answers in this post before tonight's game.
Sorry Brent, you can't guess. LOL!
I'm ashamed of you all, only 1 guess? I thought you all were Jayhawk fanatics!! Oh well here's the correct answers. The Hawks lost that game to Freeport back on January 29th, 2004. They are currently on a 30 game win streak at home, since that loss. Win tonight and extend the streak to 31!!

2nd Chances, Milestones and Love

Call it a second chance for Burrell, if you want, but tonight at 7:30, they come to the "Bird Cage" to face the Hawks, for a consecutive match up. Last night wasn't very good for Burrell as they fell to the Hawks 63 - 50.

Terrelle scored 20 more points last night on his way to the 2,000 point club, going into last nights game he was 79 points shy of that mark. Also, you might not know that he is also only 30 rebounds away from the 1,000 rebound club. This kid has memberships to clubs I'll never get in!!

Terrelle is averaging 22 points a game, so it is very well possible that he'll reach that plateau by next week!

On a lighter note (maybe), Ford City held a presale for the Jeannette game this Thursday, I think they did it to keep out the Jeannette fans personally. Pretty sad if that's the case!! They say it's so their fans get to see Terrelle, You read the article here and tell me what you think!! No love loss in Ford City!

Hawks win at Burrell

Hawks win in Burrell tonight by a score of 63 - 50, to move up to 9 - 0 in conference play and 10 - 3 overall. They face the same Burrell team tomorrow night at home, tip off set for 7:30 PM.

Hawks vs Burrell tonight

Tonight at 7:30 PM the Hawks will travel to Burrell (3-6) section and (6-10) overall, Burrell is struggling with a 3 game losing streak entering tonights contest. Not looking real good for Burrell at this point! Good Luck Hawks!!!

More Ceremony Pics

Just got some more pics from the Medals Ceremony, sent in by Steve Parsons. Thanks a bunch Steve!!

Current Standings

Another Division 1 school, chasing Jordan!

Looks like Jordan's recruiting process is starting out to be just like Terrelle's was. Jordan received yet another offer from Pitt this past week and is expected to receive even more this week. Penn State made a previous offer.

You can read Jordan's article from the Trib here.

Origin of Jayhawk mascot dates back to 1912

Along Pennsylvania Highway 130, southeast of Pittsburgh and between Monroeville and Greensburg, there is a little town that makes Lawrence, Kan., not quite so precious.
That other little town would be Jeannette, Pa., population 11,000, home of that mythical, funny-looking bird: the Jayhawk.
"They have Jayhawks plastered all over town even more than here in Lawrence. They have Jayhawk flags all over," said Paul Getto, a retired Lawrence dentist, in an interview last fall.
Getto graduated from Jeannette High in 1935. According to Jeannette lore, it was Getto's late brother, Mike Getto, who inspired Jeannette to adopt the Jayhawk as mascot, probably in 1936 or 1937.
Mike Getto, a KU assistant football coach from 1929 to 1939 and 1947 to 1950, grew up in Jeannette with his brother. Mike Getto also was the town's only All-America football player, a distinction he earned playing at the University of Pittsburgh in 1928. He died in 1960.
Paul Getto recently visited his two nephews who live in Jeannette. It was there he heard the story how the Jeannette Jayhawk came to be.

Saw it, loved it

"I questioned about it awhile back and was told it was the result of when my brother went back there years ago, and people saw the emblem on his car when Mike was in town and they wanted to use it," he said.
Ann Porreca, library assistant at the Jeannette Public Library, has heard a similar story.
"We used to be known as the Red and Blue. We had blue sweaters with red J's for Jeannette," she said. "What I've heard from someone is that Mike Getto brought the Jayhawk to us. We still use red and blue as our colors."
According to high school yearbook records, Porreca said, the first reference to the Jeannette Jayhawks was a 1937 yearbook story about a football victory, which called the team "blood thirsty Jayhawks." In a 1936 yearbook, the team was still called the Red and Blue. Paul Getto recalled the athletic teams being called the "Jeannette J's."
"I kid them about it when I'm back there and I tell them the Jayhawk originated back in Kansas," he said.

Pre-Civil War roots

At KU, the visual representation of the mythical bird wearing boots can be traced back to 1912, when Henry Maloy, a cartoonist for KU's student newspaper, introduced it.
But the name "Jayhawkers" dates back to the 1850s. It was used to describe people who looted, sacked, rustled cattle and stole horses. A few years later, people who were headed to California in wagon trains said they were going to "jayhawk" their way across the United States and thus became known as the "Jayhawkers," according to Kansas University archives.
The Jayhawk took many forms over the years, but it's Harold D. Sandy's 1946 design of a smiling Jayhawk that survives. It's also the same symbol the Jeannette High School uses today.
Doug Vance, KU's assistant athletics director for media relations, said it's hard to tell whether there was an agreement between an athletics director at KU and someone in Jeannette years ago that permitted the Pennsylvania school to use the mascot. He said if there was, it would take a lot of research to find any documentation.
In 1988, after KU won the NCAA basketball championship, Paul Vander Tuig, KU's licensing administrator, said the university registered the Jayhawk logo. He said he was not aware of another athletic team using the Jayhawk symbol.

Licensed users

One of Vander Tuig's duties is to make sure the logo is used correctly. As popular as it is, he said the Jayhawk mascot cannot be used without permission. He agreed it would take some research to learn more about the Getto story.
"The question is how is it being used and what's the likelihood of the confusion with our logo?" he said.
"If there's a Kansas tie to it, that would be something we would consider. We want to be diligent about protecting our trademark rights, but it probably isn't prudent for me to speculate."
Vander Tuig said there are approximately 450 licensed Jayhawk users who market products with the logo.
Jessica Hazelwood, a Jeannette High School junior, said the community shows a lot of support for the school's football team.
She said, "Everyone goes to the games. We have a lot of pride and spirit out here. You and us are the only ones that are called the Jayhawks."

Iowa, too

Not really. At least one other high school uses the logo and a variation on the name.
In Urbandale, Iowa, the high school's teams are known as the J-Hawks. The Des Moines suburb also uses the booted bird logo, and its girls teams are known as "Jayettes."
Annually, when basketball season gears up for the KU Jayhawks, it would be hard to contest which town has the most red-and-blue spirit.
Vander Tuig said the Jayhawk has become a beloved and well-known symbol to many people.
"It's very, very important not only for myself who deals with it every day, but also to our valued alums and the fans of our athletic teams and even the city of Lawrence has a great deal of pride for the Jayhawk. ... It means different things to each person. I'm sure each Jayhawk fan has a different story to tell," he said.

Travelin' Man

Rich Rodriguez and Terrelle, go hand in hand. It's like peanut butter and jelly! One compliments the other.

This is a photo from Terrelle's visit to Michigan today, and you can read how that trip went, right here.

And a trip to LSU is scheduled for next weekend, where we'll see how that hand matches up to Les Miles's.

Does Terrelle have frequent flyer miles?

Medals Ceremony Pic

The photo below is from the Medals Ceremony, and was sent in by Kathie Wolfe and her daughter. You may remember Kathie from her poem "Almost to Hershey".

Little help, please!

If anyone has photo's or even video of the Medals Ceremony, and wouldn't mind sharing it, I'd love to be able to post some of them on the site for, all who wasn't able to attend the ceremony. Send them to jeannettejayhawksblog@gmail.com
Thanks

Ernie Holmes, Never Forgotten!

I just can't sit back and not mention something about Ernie Holmes. After all he was part of the reason I discovered football.

Ernie was a member of that famous Steeler Defense from 1972 to 1977, "The Steel Curtain", maybe you've heard of it? I was 7 years old when Ernie was an 8th round draft pick in 1971. Ernie was released from the Steeler's in 1978. But every boy in the Pgh. area during that time bracket of 7 years, fell in love with the Pittsburgh Steeler's. And I mean every boy, (and many girls)!

I remember watching the Steel Curtain every Sunday with my Father. It was a very memorable moment in my life. Not just because of the father-son time spent together, but of the moral victory's that the Steeler's provided during, some tough times, (Examples: The Johnstown Flood of 1977, the struggling steel industry). It gave you a sense of security and great pride, in the same instance.

Right after the Sunday games, all the neighborhood boys would get together and play, what else but, football. At which time you could pretend to be any of the great Steeler's or hero's you just watched on TV. Those were the days!, It was some of the best unforgettable times of my life.

So here's to Ernie Holmes #63, May he rest in peace, as I'm sure he's touched your lives in some way or another, like he's touched mine.

Those years of Steeler football, has made western Pa., what it is today for many football greats!!

Thank You for that, Ernie Holmes!

Win-Win Situation!

Jayhawks won at East Allegheny last night 73- 59. Terrelle got a double-double in the Hawks battle against EA. He had 22 points, & 12 rebounds. Jordan sunk 19 points, and Shaw added 17 points. Jayhawks will host Burrell on Tuesday the 22nd.

The Lady Jays also deposit a win in the bank this morning. Lady Jays upset Charleroi 57 - 41. Kayla scored the game high 20 points. Lady Jays move to 10-8 overall and will host Clairton next Wednesday the 23rd.

Another Famous Jayhawk?

If you think Terrelle is BIG in this town, then take a look at the photo below. This is our very own Jerry Harris on a giant billboard, here on Route 30. Jerry recently did an ad spot for Impressions

Award Ceremony Tonight

Sitting in the stands and watching your hometown team is totally different than being a player down on the field, making it all happen. In the stands you get to see all the struggles and all the victories, all the hits play by play and in depth. A player on the field doesn't see what a fan sees, oh he's right there in the thick of it all, and he feels every hit given or taken, but he's not able to see the play unfold the way that a fan does, simply because his view is not elevated like ours.

Tonight at the Jeannette Sr. High Auditorium at 7:00, the proud community of Jeannette will elevate their players, so that they may see what the fans have, all season long. And this will be done by honoring them with Championship Trophies. There will also be an award given to the Hawks for being the number 5 team in the U.S.A.

These awards will give you the elevated view, that we as fans, have enjoyed and witnessed the entire season. With the presentation of these awards, you can now clearly see, what you've all worked so hard at, this season, to achieve. It is the pot of gold, at the end of the rainbow. These prestigious awards you've earned,... they just don't give these to anybody, so be proud of yourselves, first and foremost, cause you deserve every award you'll receive tonight. There isn't a parent or fan reading this now that would disagree with me, on that!

You've made a giant mark in the history of Jeannette Football, and there isn't anybody I know, that can proudly display that honor, except for The 2007 PIAA State Champion Jeannette Jayhawks!

I am very proud to say, "I'm a Jayhawk"
Dave

JV & Hawks vs West Shamokin Photo's 1-15-08

Terrelle isn't the only show in Jeannette!!

Hold everything!!, Terrelle isn't the only one drawing a lot of attention these days.
Our very own Lady Jay, Kayla Cook, has been selected by The Tribune Review as Female Athlete of the Week. Kayla is currently averaging 16.8 points per game. You can read the full article right here.
But that's not all, Kayla has also drawn interest from Duquesne!!
Congratulations Kayla, Were very proud of you!!
Kayla and the rest of the Lady Jays, pulled out another victory last night against West Shamokin. Winning by a score of 52 - 43.

LSU enters the mix!

It's true, Terrelle is looking at LSU!!!!!!

Read all about it here.

New Look Stays

83% of the votes, say the new look is loved with open arms, therefor it stays! Thanks for voting, your opinion matters to me!!

JV & Varsity Smoke, West Shamokin

"The Other TP", Tom Paulone got tonight's show rolling by driving down the court on the JV's first offensive drive, sinking the first 2 points.

From that moment on, Tom and the rest of the JV's never looked back. Defeating West Shamokin by a score of 54 - 29.
Toddy had game high 13 points, Brian added 11 and Chris scored on 5 attempts to give him 10 points. Fatman earned my personal star of the game, not for scoring 7 points, but for his ability to read the court ahead of him and to react accordingly. Fatman has an ability to pass to teammates when you least expect it. And I might add very accurately!!
Now let's fast forward to the Varsity squad who picked apart a West Shamokin defense, with great ease! Terrelle slammed the way with 20 points, Jordan added 19, with 3 - 3 pointers, Kenny had a big game with 11 points, and 1 from the arch, and Moziah & Shaw each added 10 a piece.
The Hawks pulled out an easy one with a score of 74 - 47, in what was a rather quick game, only a little over an hour long.
That wasn't the only entertainment tonight though, "The Step Club" took center stage or center court in this case, and performed an outstanding percussion number, on their bodies and the gym floor. Very entertaining indeed, I hope we see more of them at future games.
Up next for The Hawks?, they travel down Rt. 30 to face East Allegheny on the 18th.

Photo's From Lady Jays vs Apollo Ridge

Lady Jays let a needy one slip away!

The Lady Jays dropped a much needed win last night to the Lady Vikes of Apollo Ridge. Losing by a score of 59 -49.

The second qtr ended with a close score, 31 - 29. The Lady Jays then pulled ahead in the 3rd qtr only to relinquish the lead once again. Giving the Vikings the advantage, and they didn't look back after that.

Jeannette did pull a little closer in the 4th on four free throws from Kirstie, but it just wasn't enough to secure a win.

Kayla scored a game high 19 points, and showed great ball handling, through out the game. Kirstie added 10 more points, Renee had 6, Samantha B. contributed 5 points, and Shanae netted 4.

The Lady Vikes are ranked 4th in class AA, by the Trib and showed us exactly why they are, last night. Great passing, awesome shooting and all around impressive team play.

Ford City crushed East Allegheny last night, to gain a tie for 2nd place with Apollo Ridge.

Lady Jays face West Shamokin tonight at West Shamokin. Tip off set for 7:30PM. And the Hawks will play host to West Shamokin boys also tonight at 7:30 PM.

Little Lady Jays Roster & Stats

Ok kiddies, here they are, the roster for the Little Lady Jays and future stars for the Lady Jays!

#1-Nicole Hall
#2-Brittany Crawford
#3-Alex Metz
#4-Courtney Petrillo
#6-Michele Ruoff
#8-Monique Redman
#10-Olivia Binda
#11-Brianna Crawford
#12-Shanna Smith
#16-Danielle Jones

Danielle, Shanna, and Olivia are 5th Graders and the other girls are in 6th Grade
Here is their individual average points per game:
#8-Monique - 8.67 ppg - Like I said before, Monique can sink them from anywhere on the court!
#4-Courtney - 5.33 ppg - Courtney had a break out game against Apollo Ridge with 15 points, that's how many Kayla Cook is averaging for the Lady Jays!! WOW
#6-Michele - 4.50 ppg - Michele has been very consistent through out the season.
#10-Olivia - 2.33 ppg - Olivia had a big game against Norwin, sharing the leading scorer spot with Courtney at 6 points a piece.
#3-Alex - 2.20 - Alex has shown improvement through the season, keep up the great work Alex!
The rest of the team is averaging about 1.5 ppg, and I'm sure this is due to play time, however they are just as an important part of the team as the water girls are to the Hawks.
So there you go, I hope to have a picture of the team soon for you, but meanwhile, go watch these girls play. It's like one of those best kept secrets, in a small town. When it is discovered, everyone wants in on the action!! .....Why wait?

Buckeye QB Transfers: Could it effect Terrelle's decision?

I found this at The Detroit Free Press:

January 14, 2008
FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES

Ohio State quarterback Robby Schoenhoft will transfer to Deleware, according to ESPN.
Once a competitor with Todd Boeckman for the Buckeyes' starting quarterback job, Schoenhoft moved to tight end for the national championship game.

Schoenhoft's shift from quarterback to tight end signified dual-threat quarterback Antonio Henton's rise up the depth chart. Henton, the team's No. 3 quarterback for most of the year, became the team's backup by year's end.The move could play a role in Terrelle Pryor's recruitment. Pryor, the nation's No. 1 prospect according to Rivals.com, must choose his school by Feb. 6. The Jeannette, Pa., native will pick between a handful of schools, most notably Michigan and Ohio State. With Schoenhoft gone, the Buckeyes look closer to capitalizing on Ohio State coach Jim Tressel's promise to design the offense around a dual-threat quarterback, much like he did for former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

Is this a move to make room for Terrelle, since Michigan is probably gonna offer a starting role?

Possible 3-Way, 2nd Place Tie for Lady Jays Tonight!

The above photo shows the current standings of our Lady Jays, as of Jan. 14th, 2008.
Tonight at 7:30 pm, they face Apollo Ridge at home for a tie for second place. This naturally depends on what Ford City does tonight at East Allegheny, without their star player, Tara Powers.
Tara has to serve her 1 game suspension tonight, from the altercation with Kirstie last Thursday. Kirstie already paid her dues, when the Lady Jays hosted West Shamokin for a make-up game this past Friday.
Apollo Ridge comes into tonight's match up, with a 3 game winning streak, and not just winning they are crushing their opponents, 64-29 over Freeport, 64-21 over West Shamokin, and a 67-7 tournament win, against Leechburg.
If the Lady Jays could upset Apollo Ridge and East Allegheny helps us out by handling the "Power-less" Lady Sabres, the girls would move into a 3 way tie for 2nd with Apollo Ridge & Ford City.
I don't want to cause alarm for anybody, but this season is heating up and if you don't get out to see a Lady Jay's game, then shame on you! They're action packed like I said before, and you're gonna miss it all!

Indiana Gazette article

An Anonymous person (I wish you guys would just get a screen name, it's easier to identify with) anyway, this person left a comment with a link on the post below.

I didn't want anyone to miss this comment or link, so I brought it into it's own post. This is a very interesting article on Terrelle over at the Indiana Gazette.com.

You can read the Indiana Gazette article here.

Thank you anonymous, (see, that don't even give credit where it is due!)

Hawks Win, JV's came close!

Hawks pull out another victory at West Shamokin tonight by a score of 56 - 31, Terrelle got top honors with 23 points, Shaw scored 12, Jordan was on his heels with 10 points.
Unfortunately the JV's came up a little short losing 40 - 37 in what was a close race. Top 3 JV scorers, Greg hammered out 12 points, Brian pumped in 9, and Dane managed 6 points.

That was too easy!

That went entirely too easy! This can only mean that something bad is going to happen!! LOL

Let me know what you think!

Big Change Coming

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that I'll be changing the site around, it will look the same and still have all the features your used to, but be wider in appearance. The chat and everything on the right column will now be on the left side. This will also naturally put the posts on the right side instead of the left, but will also make them wider.
If by chance you visit the site and can't see anything or get an error, have patience! I will get the site back online. Hopefully this will go as great as the Hawks season.
Sorry if this inconveniences anyone, but like I said, have some patience and we'll be back online before Kayla scores her next 2 pointer.
Thanks and I think your gonna like the new look,
Dave

If this goes right, most of you won't see any of the in between transactions, you'll just refresh your page and the new one should be there after I do it. Let's Pray!!

Official Poll

One of the biggest complaints, I hear, and I know you do as well, is that the officials blew the game, or the officials were terrible. I've heard this from coaches, from players, from parents, and from the fans. Is it true? I posted a poll on the right, let everyone know what you think about the PIAA officiating! Do they need better training?, Should they be paid for making bad calls? You make the call, this time!

Busy night for Basketball

Hawks won in Freeport last night, 76-50. Jordan led the way with 24 points, Terrelle had 20 and Kenny got 10. Tonight the Hawks (5-0 conf., 6-3 overall) will play a make-up game against West Shamokin (4-3 conf., 10-3 overall) at West Shamokin. Tip-off set for 7:30 PM.
Also last night, and the 2nd game I attended for the evening, the Lady Jays played excellent defense in their romp of the West Shamokin Lady Wolves. By a score of 44 - 30. Kayla scored 16 points to lead the way again for the Lady Jays. And putting on an impressive performance was freshman Shanae Daye with, 6 points and an even better show on defense. Samantha B. had a nice steal and layup for 2 points late in the 3rd qtr. However though, the girls looked a little sluggish, or simply not playing 100% due to the fact that several players were sitting on the bench. Kirstie was serving her 1 game suspension, from the Ford City game, Lauren M. missed the game due to illness. And although Renee started, she was on the bench for most of the game only to return late, not sure what happened there.

The Lady Jays will have a couple days to regroup and "heal all wounds", they return to the hardwood on Monday the 14th to host Apollo Ridge (2-6 conf., 7-9 overall) at 7:30 PM

Small packages, Big surprises!!

This evening I witnessed the makings of future champions. I'm not talking mini Terelle's or half pint Jordan's here. I'm talking "Little Lady Jays". Yeah, you heard me right. Little Lady Jays.

Now, I didn't run out on the court and measure how tall these girls were, but I'd bet money the tallest one was no bigger than 48". I know you've all heard the saying, "Big surprises come in small packages", well I'm pretty sure that that is true, I seen it tonight.

There was a moment where the coach had to remind 2 girls to pay attention during warm ups, but other than that, these girls were very attentive. Listened carefully to the coach's instructions and executed the plays just as precise. They have speed, they have shooters, they have rebounders, they have defense, and they have great coach's, but the biggest thing I noticed is that they all have fun playing the game. Call it fundamentals if you want!!

The Little Lady Jays are currently 5-1. Tonight they upset Norwin by a score of 31-10. I apologize for not having any stats from these girls, heck I don't even know there names. I can tell you this though, #4 is quick, and #8 can sink them from anywhere on the court. This doesn't mean the other girls can't, they were all just as impressive.

I had a lot of fun watching them play, and it gave me some comfort in knowing that these girls will one day be Lady Jays, that will be able to carry out the tradition of girls basketball at Jeannette. I recommend that you go watch them play, I promise you'll have a good time!

A page from Terrelle's diary

Michigan is very high on the list, and Charlie Batch to help Terrelle with all the pressure.
Read the rest of Terrelle's diary here!

2 Birds with 1 Stone!

I'm lazy today, we'll not really, I'm trying to get some things done so I can go to the basketball games tonight.

So I just wanted to let you in on 2 items of interest that was in the local paper here, today.

The first is Penn State offered Jordan a scholarship. This tells me that Penn State isn't wasting any time, they know what Jordan has got to offer, and they want to be the first in line to try and get it. Way to go Jordan, and we would also like to make a 3rd consecutive trip to Hershey!

And second is an article about the Lady Jays and Ford City game, so I'm gonna knock out 2 birds with 1 stone. This article gives the stats and outcome of the game, which was a close one, but more important, it shows how tough even our girls basketball team is, or at least one player.

I love the toughness, not just on the field, but even on the court, Kirstie!!!

Why not catch some hoop action tonight?

Reminder about tonight's Lady Jays game. West Shamokin will make the trip to Jeannette tonight to try and knock Kayla and the rest of the Lady Jays off their game. This is a rescheduled game, so you won't find it on any printed schedules.

Stop up the school and congratulate the girls on their achievement thus far in the season.

The Hawks will be traveling north to Freeport, so if your not making that journey, then come watch the Lady Jays at home. Either way, get out and catch some hoop action, you'll be glad you did!!

B-Ball Rankings and Scoring Leaders, We got them both!

Basketball Rankings at The Post Gazette has Jeannette at 2nd, in AA.
In top leading scorers from class AA we have two standouts to be proud of ,
Terrelle in boys basketball averaging 25.0 PPG and Kayla Cook in girls basketball averaging 15.0 PPG.

Lady Jays win BIG!!

It looks like I missed another great game. This time it was the Lady Jays destroying Leechburg, last night, setting the tone of the game right out of the gates, with a 1st qtr score of 28 - 4 and capturing the win by a score of 63 - 26. Here's a quick scoring summary:
  • Not only did Renee lead the team with 9 rebounds, she also led with points scored at 13.
  • Kayla had 12 points and 5 assist
  • Lauren Maline showed her abilities from every area of the court, sinking a 2 pointer, 2 - 3 pointers and 1 from the foul line.
  • Nicole Linsenbigler had a great game adding 7 points, 3 by way of the foul line.
  • Shanice scored 6 points
  • Shanae and Chana each added 4 points
  • Kirstie had 3 points, Lauren B. & Chelsea each added 2 a piece, and Tatiana sunk 1 from the free throw line

Tonight the Lady Jays journey north yet again to face conference competition in Ford City (4-2 Conf.). With last nights win the Lady Jays are now 3-2 in conference play and 7-6 overall. Tonight's match up will be a tough one for the girls, Ford City is 2nd in section for defense only allowing an average of 38.2 points per game. However, the Lady Jays lead the conference in points per game averaging 51.9 per game. The tension is building, can you feel it? I can.

Good luck tonight girls!!!

PS: And don't forget the schedule change for the Lady Jays, they host West Shamokin Friday night at 7:30.

Basketball catchup, for me anyway.

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the delays today. I was in Philly and didn't get home until late. However that doesn't stop basketball games from going on. And they did at that.

I posted some great photo's (thanks to my professional sports photographer, JP) of both games against GCC, The Lady Jays & The Hawks, over on the right (scroll down a little).

The Hawks won big, unfortunately I missed it, I was resting and getting ready for Philly trip. But that's how it happens for me, the fantastic games that Terrelle slam dunks just about all night long, are the ones that I miss! Jordan was outstanding with 19 points with 3-3 pointers.Shaw landed 18 points, Terrelle had 16 points and several slam dunks, Moziah and Kenny each had 8 points, Cameron added 7 and Nick and Dane each had 2 a piece. Giving the Hawks an 80 - 54 victory. Up next for the Hawks is a trip to Freeport this Fri. the 11th., the last meeting between these two resulted in a 81-50 win for Jeannette. Freeport is on a roll right now, winning 4 of their last 5 games.

While were on the Hawks, there has been a schedule change: This Sat the Hawks will travel to West Shamokin and play a make up game from Dec. 11th, during football season.

Also a small note of interest the the boys JV won against GCC also, and I'm told Fatman has the sneakiest pass this side of the Mississippi! Can't wait to see that.

And last but not least in my journey to get caught up to date, I was invited to go see "The Little Lady Jays" play this Friday, They're currently 4-0 and I am told they have some very talented young ladies on the roster. I'm starting to see a pattern here, I don't know about you. The Hawks midget leagues continue to produce talented football players year after year, and I believe this trend has spilled over onto the basketball program as well.

I think I'm gonna go watch the Little Lady Jays this Friday and then scoot up to watch the Lady Jays also, I'll be better able to determine if this is in fact what is happening. Why not join me this Friday evening, I think this is something you won't want to miss, and you know it's gonna be fun!!!

A critic is someone who gives his/her opinion, that's all!!

Josh Funk @ Western Pa. Football reports:

Jeannette head football coach Ray Reitz thought things had become a little quiet in regards to the critics that argue Class "AA" doesn't produce talent.

"Where are the critics now?" he asked.

To put it simply, there are none.

OK, there may still be some. But after the performances of Terrelle Pryor and Jonathan Baldwin in San Antonio this past weekend, there shouldn't be any.

Pryor and Baldwin had a hand in 3 of the East team's 5 touchdowns in the Army All-American game. Baldwin caught a 46-yard touchdown pass, and Pryor totaled 155 yards of offense, running for a score and throwing another. And they did it against competition coming from schools classified as high as 6A.

The 51-year old Reitz could tell you he told you so. He'd been preaching to the point of nearly turning blue in the face that Class "AA" could turn out quality football players that could play at any level.

"You have to look at the individual talent (with the smaller schools), not the team," Reitz said.
Bigger schools, Reitz said, are at a disadvantage. "They are going old Big Ten, run, run, run, run the football," he said, "And that's well and good, but then when they face a spread team, it's like a fish out of water."

Upper St. Clair might contend that last statement, as they dominated a Liberty spread attack that averaged over 40 points and 350 yards per game in 2006 to capture state gold.

But still, credence should be lent to Reitz' comments. Reitz has been in the game for over 20 years, and could tell you that bigger isn't always better. However, the theorists that devised the "bigger is better" mentality developed quite a following, and it trickled down even to high school football.

Most schools ranked in the national top 25 polls are AAAA schools or larger. Prior to Reitz' Jayhawks garnering a #25 spot in the final edition of the USA Today national rankings, no PA small school had ever been nationally ranked.

Anyone would have a hard time believing that fact. Great teams such as Mount Carmel, Rochester, and Southern Columbia pillaged through their competition. MCA reached 6 state title games from 1994 to 2002, winning 5.

Rochester has won 7 WPIAL football titles and reached the state finals 4 times from 1998 to 2002, winning three. Yet the Rams never received national recognition.

Southern Columbia had a 27-game winning streak, winning 5 consecutive state finals appearances from 2002-2006. But the Tigers, aside from an ESPN feature package when two players tragically drowned, never got attention from the USA Today polls.

Even the 2003 edition of the Aliquippa Quips didn't garner national attention. Led by current NFL player Darelle Revis, the Quips won state gold and made the run to the title look relatively easy.

In fact, no school from PA classified lower than Class "AAA" had been nationally ranked since Strath Haven entered the 2002 pre-season ranked in the #22 spot.

"Is that right? Wow," Reitz said. "I didn't know all that."

Now, the site Maxpreps.com is coming to Jeannette to hand out some hardware, in the form of a #5 national ranking. It's the highest such ranking in the history of the program, which has won 642 games and 7 WPIAL titles.

"(The national ranking) It's an honor," Reitz said.

Maybe all the national recognition will quiet some of the critics. Maybe critics will still remain.
But if any critics of smaller schools do remain, their argument just got a whole lot tougher after Saturday.

My personal thought: These critics will never admit they were wrong! It would mean that they would have to get a real job!!

The Rivalry Continues Tonight!!

The Hawks take on The Centurions of Greensburg tonight at Jeannette. Tip off is at 7:30 PM.
Tonight's match up can be heard live on SAM 107.1 or if you live out of town you can tune into MSA Sports Network, whichever you choose, pregame starts at 7:00 PM.

Strong performance falls short

Even with the return of Renee, who had 7 points and 5 rebounds and the amazing 34 points and 11 rebounds contributed by Kayla, GCC was still a little too much for the Lady Jays to handle.

The Lady Jays were down 22 - 9 in the 1st qtr. And again outscored in the 2nd qtr., 23 - 13 to find themselves down 45 - 22 at halftime. After some halftime adjustments and well deserved rest the girls were able to outscore GCC in the 3rd and 4th qtrs., by a total of 39 - 27. Unfortunately, that just wasn't enough to pull out a win.

Worst case scenario: we know what to look for now when GCC comes to Jeannette on the 31st of Jan.

Other than Kayla with 34 points and Renee and Kirstie, each with 7 points, we had contributions from: Samantha B. with 6 points, Shanae & both the Lauren's each had 2 points, and Shavon added 1 from the foul line.

Next up for the Lady Jays, a trip to Leechburg (0-6 conf. & 0-13 overall) this Wed., Jan. 9th.

Small note of interest: Coming into last nights game with a 8-2 record, The Lady Jays JV squad lost in OT to GCC by a score of 45-43.

Lady Jays Video!!!!

Here's a little taste of what the Lady Jays can do. This first one is Samantha B. seeing Kirstie breaking and well...taking advantage of it!

This one shows the ability of the girls to read and react to each other on the court, watch it, you'll see what I mean!

The problem with society is lack of communication!

Hello again,
Just a quick update,
I have implemented 3 different methods to communicate with each other, here on the site.

The first is the chat box on the right, which has quickly become a big hit. You can chat with anybody you want at anytime. I would recommend you get a screen name so that everyone can be associated with the site in some manner. You can upload a picture of yourself and even create a profile, to share with your friends. I must caution you though, whatever you type in this chat box can be seen by all who is on the site.

That's why I added the smaller chat box below that one. This chat is directed only to me, and cannot be seen by others visiting the site. It's more of a private way to exchange information.

And 3rd is the newest method, it's called Skype. Located directly below the mini chat box. Perhaps many of you have heard of this. It is like having a telephone on your computer, you can call others with Skype free of charge. You can find out more and download Skype here. This program is free and so is the download. I use it a lot, the call quality is crystal clear and Skype is very simple to use. If you can use your phone at home, then you can use Skype. Try it out and Skype me!

Motor City Madness over Terrelle?

Another good article on Terrelle, and this one is from Michigan and The Detroit Free Press!

The New York Times is onboard for the ride!

Here's a really interesting article on Terrelle at The New York Times Newspaper site.

Lady Jays meet rival GCC

On Monday evening at 7:30 PM, The Lady Jays will travel up Rt 30, to face Greensburg Central Catholic. GCC is 5-0 in conference and 8-4 overall, and coming off a win against Seneca Valley, 54 - 50. The Lady Jays also are coming into the game off of a "down to the wire" win against East Allegheny, 45 - 41.

With the history of the Jeannette - GCC rivalry, Monday's match up should prove to be a very good one. Kayla Cook scored 15 points against EA and Samantha Linsenbigler sunk 10, to end up the top 2 scorers of that game. We also should see the return of the rebound queen, Renee Reitz. But if not Lauren Maline who had a great game against EA as well, will be more than happy to fill them shoes! Lauren ended up with 8 rebounds and 3 points, vs EA.

Why not make the small trip to Carbon, and enjoy an action packed evening with the Lady Jays!

MVP, Surpasses Reggie Bush

Jayhawks win!!!, Jayhawks win!!!! 33 - 23..... No, wait a minute....Oh, that was the East wins!!!! Sorry, I could have sworn that was a Jayhawks game.

If there ever was any doubters about Terrelle and his abilities, he pretty much convinced them otherwise today, on national TV even.

Terrelle was the MVP of today's game by unanimous decision, like who didn't know that was gonna happen? But a little more interesting was this, did you know that Terrelle passed Reggie Bush for rushing yardage today? It's true. Terrelle rushed for 79 yards today and is the 3rd highest rusher in the history of the Army All-American game.

Thank you Dee, for the heads up!!

Help, Damsel in Distress!

We need a little help here,
I got a female friend who is in hot water with her husband, because she messed up what was supposed to be a recording of The Army All-American game. Now I am aware that this is a very serious offense against the wedding vows so, If anybody has recorded this and wouldn't mind burning a copy or 2 (I'd like one also, please), please email me!
You could be saving a life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Terrelle with the Maxwell Award
Thank You Anthony, Great Pictures!!!

US Army Player of the Year

He got it, Terrelle was awarded the US Army Player of the year last night!!

Jayhawks Win Big!!

I'm told the Jayhawks won their basketball game tonight against Apollo Ridge, by a wide margin,(not sure of exact score), but invoked the mercy rule in the process. I was unable to attend the game.

Maxwell Award and more?

The accolades keep coming for Terrelle.
He was named a High School Maxwell Award winner Thursday during a news conference in San Antonio. The awards are given to the best high school players in the U.S. at each position. The Maxwell Award Club has been honoring football players at the collegiate and professional level since 1935, but this is the first year it has reached out to high school players.
Also Mike White at The Post Gazette is reporting that Terrelle has a "good shot" at being Parade's National Player of the Year. This award is one of the most prestigious national awards out there. Check out Mike's thoughts here in the Varsity Blog. Especially the one about Michigan!!

Army All-American QB Comparison

Pryor vs Gabbert, Read all about it here!

All-American Match up

U.S. Army All-American Bowl Matchup
QB - Terrelle Pryor vs. LB - Lynn Katoa

Katoa may not look great physically, but he can move and anticipates the play well. With the offense the East will be running, it will be his job to shadow Pryor and make sure he doesn't make big plays. He also can't bite up too much when Pryor gets out of the pocket or the middle will be wide open. Katoa has his work cut out for him because he's clearly not as quick as Pryor. Edge: Pryor
And yes, Terrelle is the starting QB!

Sorry Terrelle, The Lady Jays pull rank tonight!!

I'm told Terrelle won the Maxwell Award tonight in San Antonio. But you know what folks, I'm sure TP won't mind taking a backseat to the Lady Jays Performance tonight. Tomorrow is another day. Tonight belongs to The Lady Jays!!

45-41, Shear Determination from The Lady Jays!!

If I were to sum tonight's game up in two words, they would have to be "Shear Determination"

I personally thought this was gonna be a slow, holiday hangover, type of game. Boy, was I ever wrong! The Lady Jays had a lot of problems finding the net in the first qtr., but no harm done because so did EA.

But the 2nd qtr. was a lot different. The Lady Jays opened it up, scoring 11 more points to EA's 4. Taking a 22-13 lead into the locker room. A very intense qtr. with a tremendous amount of "D" from the girls and an absolute amazing pass from Kayla to Kirstie, who naturally finished off the job, sinking it for 2. And folks this pass play was caught on film, and I'm working on getting it for you all to see, hopefully this weekend. It's one of those,"you got to see it to believe it", pass plays.

The 3rd qtr scared me a little, EA came out of the locker room on fire! Scoring 8 unanswered points and stunning the Lady Jays as well. But Coach Vertacnik and the girls wouldn't settle for an upset, the Lady Jays pulled out all the stops keeping the game close, right down to a 37-37 tie with 2:24 left in the 4th qtr. But it didn't end there, defense and hustle prevailed once again, holding EA down, 43-41 with 4.3 ticks left on the clock.

Enter: Samantha Linsenbigler with 1.6 sec. left, from the foul line, sinking both free throws and any hopes that EA might have had, of a comeback.
  • Kayla - 15 points
  • Samantha L. - 10 points
  • Kirstie - 5 points
  • Shanice & Shanae - each had 4 points
  • Lauren M. - 3 points
  • Samantha B. & Chana - 2 points a piece

Final score 45-41! Way to go Lady Jays!! Next up for the girls: @GCC on Jan. 7th

Notable point: I couldn't help but notice the increase of fans at tonight's game, it was wonderful to see so many of you there.(And making noise!!!) And, not to say I told you so,... but wasn't that the best $3.00 you ever spent for an evening of entertainment? Honestly!
And for the ones who are unsure about the Lady Jays, and who didn't attend the game tonight, check the website this weekend for the video, perhaps then you will see what you've been missing!!

Holidays are Out, Basketball is In!!

LADY JAYS VS EAST ALLEGHENY, TONIGHT AT 7:30 PM
Come out and support the Lady Jays!!
See Ya at the game!!!

Chatting with Terrelle.

Terrelle, stopped by for a chat with Rivals.com users in the recruiting message board Monday afternoon live from the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.
Here is a transcript of the chat:

How confident are you that OSU can design an offense that will fit your style and allow you to use your ability to run and pass?

If you make a decision before signing day, will you wait until signing day to announce it or make your choice known as soon as you decide?

-PhunkyBuck

Terrelle Pryor - Im just confident because in my mind if I am playing quarterback the coach would use me to my abilities.

It will probably be before Signing Day, but I'll probably just let it go to Signing Day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1)What are some weaknesses in your game you feel you'll need to improve upon to be successful at the college level?

2)Who impressed you at practice today?

-Buckeyecty4

Pryor - "Quarterback technique is not the greatest, but I'm going to work on it.

"I think everybody (impressed). None of them looked overrated to me. Some of them looked underrated. They're all good athletes and that's why they're here."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What Intrigues you with the possibility of having Michael Brewster, Mike Adams, JB Shugarts, and maybe Josh Jenkins all block for you.

What impact will your visit to Ann Arbor and Jim Tressel's house visit have on your final Decision

And Will Ohio state's or Michigan's Bowl Performance effect your decision.

-TheeBuckeyeNut

Pryor - "Today, Adams and Jenkins blocked real well and I know Brewster's a beast. If I was to choose that school I know they'll have my back.

"Bowl performance is nothing because that's not what picking a school is about.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How much is distance going to play a part in his decision? Does a school like, for example, Oregon, have some ground to make up for or cover because they are further away?

If he really is open, how come he chose to take a trip to OSU long before he visited anywhere else, and why is he waiting until now to really look into some top schools?

-IDieSkating

Pryor - "[Distance] won't play a part."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are your top 3 factors in choosing your college destination?
Is your visit to Ann Arbor set up, and if not, will you definately visit before your decision?

-Dr. P

Pryor - "Comfortable with coaches and players, that's really it for me. I want to know that the coaches are telling the truth.

"Yes, my visit is set up. I'm visiting the last weekend in January or early February."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Is your family pushing for a certain school?

2) Although you have set a final 5 schools are there any others that may jump into that top 5 or is it case closed that one of those 5 will be where you go?

-Jpripper88

Pryor - "My dad was pushing for Pitt, but not anymore. He knows I'm not going to go there. They're letting me choose my own school.

"It's case closed."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where did Tennessee stand before the departure of David Cutcliffe? Were they in the lead?

With Cut is Duke seriously in the mix?

-nycvol010

Pryor - "They were probably in my top three.

"Yes, if I was any other recruit I'd give them a look too because he's going to make it happen there. He's a smart guy and he knows his football."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do you think you are the #1 recruit in the Nation base on Rivals?

-PVBama7

Pryor - "There's all kinds of other kids who could be No. 1. It's just somebody's opinion."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you visiting Oregon in Jan?

-verbalduck

Pryor - "I don't know. I haven't made up my mind about that yet.

moderator - Pryor has Duke and Michigan visits set up as of now for the month of January. Others possbily could be set up like Florida.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you feel about the respective coaches of your top schools (Michigan, OSU, Florida, etc...)?
How has the recruiting process been working with these coaches?

-chatmar2

Pryor - "When you look at the coaches you've got Jim Tressell and he's classy. It's been a fun process with him. You've got Joe Paterno. Then you've got Rodriguez and Urban Meyer. Those four or five coaches, it can be overwhelming. It's a fun process and it's enjoyable.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If Ryan Mallett does transfer, do you look at that as a positive for Michigan since the job would be yours as a freshman?

-Cza_Behave

Pryor - "I don't care who's there. You've got to fight for every position.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Have you decided on what you want to major in yet?

2. Does any school listed appeal more to you because of your major?

-altball24

Pryor - "Criminal Justice. That's the only thing that is interesting to me.

"The major I picked, everyone has and they're good at it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will having a great, fast group of WRs ready for you to throw to play a role in your decision?

-UFgators3

Pryor - "Every team I have right here has some crazy fast receivers. At Michigan you have my cousin, Toney Clemons. He's fast, big and good. Ohio State has all those receivers. Florida has all them receivers as well as Oregon and Penn State.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What makes you dangerous as a QB?

Based on the videos I've seen, if I'm a defensive coordinator my scouting report would be that "Pryor will hurt you by land or by air".

-coachrobbie

Pryor - "If I see the pocket collapse, I can move around and make D-backs choke up. It's the greatest to see those d-backs look up in the air after the ball goes over their heads.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If OSU shows the spread in the Championship game will that prove Coach Tressel will design the offense around your talents?

-lenin1

Pryor - "Coach Tressel has to go with what he has. Boeckman is not a spread guy. Why would he change when you are in the National Championship?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What made you decide to eliminate Pitt from the running?

-pittengineer75

Pryor - "I just didn't want to be in that area. It's too close to home. I don't like their offense either.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although the spread offense seems like a good offense to fit your skills in college, do you have any concerns that most NFL scouts and teams do not feel it best prepares a quarterback for playing at the NFL level (which is your ultimate goal)?

-pittengineer75

Pryor - "This is a good question. VINCE YOUNG!!

Top 25 Stories of 2007

The boys at MSA Sports Network have released their top 25 stories of 2007, and coming in at 2nd was our beloved Jayhawks, and their remarkable season.

#2 How Great Was Jeannette and Terrell Pryor?

While two other WPIAL teams also won WPIAL and PIAA gold this past football season with perfect 16-0 record (Pittsburgh Central Catholic and Thomas Jefferson), what the Jeannette Jayhawks and their stud quarterback Terrelle Pryor accomplished with be talked about for years and decades to come. Shortly after the Jayhawks wrapped up the season with another one-sided victory in the state championship game at Hershey, the debate began on where Jeannette falls among the all-time great teams and where Pryor ranks among the all-time great players to come out of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Some of the numbers are mind-boggling. The team won 14 of its 16 games with the mercy rule invoked. The mercy rule kicks in when a team takes a 35-point or more lead in the second half. The clock continues to run except for a score or a timeout. Despite playing his starters in most games for only two quarters, the Jayhawks set a state record for most points in a season. And what about Pryor? He had 3,788 yards of offense, believed to be a single-season WPIAL record. He rushed 143 times for 1,899 yards (13.3 average), and completed 87 of 130 for 1,889 yards. He accounted for 58 touchdowns (35 himself and 23 passing). He scored 33 rushing, one on a reception and one on an interception return. He ran for a touchdown about once every four attempts, and about one out of every four completions went for a touchdown. Pryor finished his career with 4,238 yards rushing on 435 attempts. He completed 232 of 399 for 4,340 yards and 44 touchdowns. He accounted for 125 career touchdowns. Pryor was recruited by schools across the country and has narrowed his list to Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Penn State and Oregon. His final decision will likely be one of the top stories in 2008.

Terrelle Practice Video

There is some great stuff at rivals.com about the US Army All-American Game, here is some video of Terrelle, and some other stand out players, in the 11 man drills during practice.
I cut out Terrelle's highlights and posted them in the Jayhawks Media clip section.

Hockey?

Over at my house, football isn't the only loved sport! I know, I know, but who in their right mind wouldn't love hockey also?

These guys hit just as hard if not harder than football players, and is in fact a fast paced game.

My son is probably the biggest Penguins fan in the country. And I'm not that far behind him! So there was no way we were gonna miss the Pens up in Buffalo at the Winter Classic!

I know this takes us out of our element here, but this was a moment in sports history. You can see the results of that game here. And even more info right here.

Thanks for letting me squeeze this in!!

First impressions are everything!

Just because it's a new year, doesn't change the way that Terrelle continues to impress people. He's only getting better, people!!

Coach Prunty, head coach of the East squad in the Army All American Bowl, was very impressed with Terrelle.

On a slight sour note, Jonathan Baldwin pulled a groin muscle but is expected to be just fine.

Read all the first impressions from the first day of practice for the East squad, over at rivals.com.

Happy New Year!!!!!!!

I want to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!! And I hope your resolutions all become realities!!! Thanks for making 2007 a special year for me!!!
